NO C3 Sy THOMAS PUSH For most schoolchildren, a field trip to Washington, D.C, historic sites is a memorable event But for the 8th and Qth-graders of JHS 226, known as the Virgil I. Grissom JHS, the trip had a special added meaning: The students took part in a special Arlington National Cemetery memorial service to the heroic astronaut who gave his life serving his country.

It marked the fourth annual Grissom Remembrance Day observed by the South Ozone Park school, at 121-22 Rockaway Blvd. The trip was approved by District 27 Superintendent Marvin Aaron and Principal John Baxter. In addition to visiting the FBI Building, National Archives, White House, Capitol, Kennedy Center, Ford Theater, Smithsonian Institute, Embassy Row and the Lincoln, Jefferson and Washington monuments during the weeklong trip, the students became honorary members of a special remembrance ceremony held at the gravesite of the astronaut The students were greeted at the gates of the cemetery by officials and given an escort to Grissom's grave. They later placed a wreath on the grave in remembrance of his heroism, devotion to perfection and honor. The ceremony, which has become a yearly tradition for the students, concluded with taps played by a Marine Corps bugler.
