C2 CALGARY HERALD Thursday, July 28, 2005 ENTERTAINMENT From CI CITY Mff 7'f js it 7 7 VffH to a newsroom design, which will allow viewers to see reporters and producers at work behind the scenes. A-Channcl's news programs at noon, 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. will be renamed CityNews at Noon, CityNews at 6 and CityNews Tonight beginning Aug. 2.

There will be no change in staff, Pietrus says. The 6 p.m. newscast will continue to be co-anchored by Su-sanne Fox and Ted Henley. Fox will host the noon newscast, while Henley will lead the 11 p.m. slot.

"The biggest change you'll notice is you're also going to see reporters play a much more active role in their stories," says Pietrus. "The shows will look quite different in terms of graphics, pacing and the overall energy of the show will be higher." With programming from CHUM now available, the station has picked up several new TV shows for the fall. Among them is Everybody Hates Chris, starring Chris Rock; the sci-fi drama Supernatural and Three Wishes, a reality series starring Amy Grant. Monday Night Football will also return to the channel. "Strap yourself into your lazy boy," says Pietrus.

"You're about to get the full treatment." ABURROUGHSTHEHERALD.CANWEST.COM Despite the fact that the majority of people in the room woke up before 5 a.m., everyone seems to be happy to be there. It's not exactly what you might expect for a station in transition. Although the station's new branding will officially launch in September, signs of the old station will be tossed this week in favour of newly branded local programming, which will be seen for the first time on Aug. 2. It's a big change from the old western Canadian based Craig.

CHUM owns 33 radios stations, 21 specialty TV channels (among them, MuchMu-sic) and 12 local stations across the country, including City TV in Toronto, Vancouver and now Winnipeg, Edmonton and Calgary. Staffers, however, say they have no fear of a Toronto takeover. "Yes, (CHUM) is a big company. Yes, they are based out of Toronto with City TV there as their benchmark, but they're still local in every single market," says McCool. "I like that they're a big company without being a network.

I don't think there is any risk of us becoming a Toronto show." General manager Al Thorgeirson says Peter Mah, Calgary Herald Host Tara McCool, left, and producer Marina Labby with A-Channel's new City TV brand colours. The Big Breakfast gained in spring ratings, it remains well behind Global TVs Morning Show. Thorgeirson says he hopes the station can parlay its identity change into a better on-air product and, consequently, higher ratings. "We're not even close to where we want to be," says Thorgeirson. "We're in the rebuilding process with the brand change and everything so if we can start to move the ratings needle up over the next 12 months we'll be satisfied with that initially." The Big Breakfast, hosted by McCool and Dave Kelly, will become BT Breakfast Television Aug.

2. Beyond the morning show, news director Mike Pietrus says the look and style of all local newscasts will change since CHUM's purchase, the company has been conducting a survey in Calgary to identify ways in which the station can improve its local market share. A-Channel has long struggled in the ratings behind Bell Globemedia's CTV and Global TV, which is owned by Can West Global Communications (which is also the parent company of the Herald).
