New notices are marked by an SLATER Mrs. Phemie Slater passed away peacefully at the Beverly Care Centre on Friday, September 21, 2001 at the age of 90 years. Phemie was born in Calgary on June 4, 1911. She and her husband Bob owned and operated the Elgin Grocery in Inglewood for many years.

Phemie lived in Victoria during her retirement years. She returned to Calgary in 1995. Until the time of her passing she resided at the Beverly Care Centre. She will be lovingly remembered by her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Cheryl Slater of Calgary; grandsons, Michael and Jeff (Kim); great-grandson Austin; and a special niece Donna (John) Desutter. She was predeceased by her husband Bob, son Brian and her only sister Margaret.

Val is suaived by a brother Jim (Bette) Foreman of Calgary; a sister Dianne Dick; and nieces, Angel, Robin, Christine; and nephew Josh. As a young woman, Val was active as a cub leader, using her imagination to make childrens' camping trips and cub meetings a challenging and rewarding experience. In her early twenties she opened her first daycare in Calgary, called Tiny Tots.

She later taught Early Childhood Education at Medicine Hat College Brooks Campus as well as Lethbridge Community College and Bow Valley College. She went on to teach adults creative and innovative ways of teaching children in her many workshops. At the time of her passing, Val was employed by Hearthstone Child Family Services where she enjoyed being part of the team. Many daycare workers throughout Alberta learned how to ignite a child's imagination through Val's leadership at workshops or college level courses. Above all of the work Val did throughout her life, the most rewarding of all was the time she spent with her daycare children, seeing them grow up and remember their teacher from daycare.

Val will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Spark Stanley BECKSTEAD Marguerite Louise (nee Colter) Beckstead was born in Crystal City, Manitoba on January 14, 1919 and passed away peacefully at her home in Calgary on September 21, 2001.

Marguerite was married to Clarence Edwin (Ted) Beckstead for fifty-four years. Although in the last few years her body was frail, her mind and spirit were always strong. Marguerite pushed herself and everyone around her to learn new things, believing that you should learn something new every day. She challenged herself by memorizing favorite poems, and in the last year could recite the inscription found on the Statue of Liberty. Marguerite worked in a law office as a young woman, as a pre-school teacher, and at the Kiwanis Music Festival as well as being a homemaker and parent who truly enriched the lives of her children and grandchildren.

She had a life long love of music and sang in many Calgary choirs including the Choral Society, the Choral Belles, and Wesley United Church Choir. She sang in Handel's Messiah, Beethoven's 9th Symphony and many Gilbert and Sullivan productions. Marguerite could make us laugh with a good story, give us a word of encouragement when we needed it and was always able to speak her mind. Marguerite will be sadly missed by her husband Ted; her children, Jamie (Mora), Patty (Denis), Douglas (Andrienne); and her grandchildren, Claire, Paul and Jocelyn; as well as her sister Erma Howes of Lethbridge together with many nieces and nephews. Marguerite was predeceased by her parents, Herbert and Barbara Colter, her brothers, Orville, Karl and James Colter and her sister Olive Couch.

Teresa was born July 8, 1910, in Wolsum, The Netherlands. In 1952, Teresa, her husband and nine children immigrated from The Netherlands to Lethbridge and moved a year later to Calgary. She was predeceased by her husband Ruurd of fifty-four years on March 3, 1987, a daughter Hieke and her husband Andy Veenstra. Teresa is survived by her daughters, Ann (Neil) Sinnema, Susan (Arnold) Nadeau and Jane (Richard) Grobowsky; her sons, Sidney (Ria) Boonstra, Dale (Ruth) Boonstra, Brian (Leni) Boonstra, Edward (Mary) Boonstra and Rudy (Betty) Boonstra; also twenty-seven grandchildren and thirty-one great-grandchildren. Teresa will be remembered by her family and friends for her "koeke and warm smile and giving nature.

BRANSON Dwight Branson passed away suddenly on September 21, 2001 at the age of 48 years. Dwight was the victim of a tragic accident in the west country, which he loved. He was born on July 7, 1953 in Innisfail, Alberta. He is survived by his loving wife Lynn of Innisfail; children, Shawn Fostvelt of Nanaimo, B.C., and Pam (Brian) Whitehead; and his precious grandchildren, Jessica and Tia Whitehead, also of Nanaimo, B.C.; His parents, Herb and Frieda Branson of Innisfail; sister Pat (Tom) Cates of Vancouver, Washington; brother Larry (Pam) Branson of Manotick, Ontario; his brother Loren (Gail) Branson of Calgary; his sister-in-law Heather Parliament of Edmonton; and his mother-in-law Majorie Brass of Innisfail; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and a host of good friends. Dwight graduated from S.A.I.T.

with his diploma in Petroleum Technology and continued his career in the oil and gas industry until his death. At the time of his death Dwight and Lynn farmed in the Knee Hill Valley district. He was respected and admired by all who knew him. Dwight was known for his dedication to his work and his enthusiasm for life. Dwight passion for the great outdoors included hunting, fishing, boating and crabing with his grandchildren.

A celebration of Dwight' life will be held at the United Church Innisfail on Thursday, September 27, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Schizophrenia Society of Calgary or the charity of the donor choice. Julia is survived by her sister Doris Yanda of Edmonton, her niece Louise (Eugene) Charko of Calgary and by other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband John in 1973, two sisters and seven brothers. BUMANIS Paulis "Paul' Rudolfs Bumanis passed away on Wednesday, September 19, 2001 at the age of 88 years. He is survived by his loving wife Thelma; daughter Cynthia Noonan and her husband Bill of San Francisco; son Dennis and wife Shelley of Calgary; six grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; and extended family in Latvia. Born February 21, 1913 in Riga, Latvia, he studied Textile and Civil Engineering.

He managed a large textile plant until World War II and the occupation of Latvia by the Communists. He spent more than a year in a POW Camp in Germany and afterwards worked for the United Nations Relief Organization. Paul immigrated to England in 1948 then to Toronto, Canada in 1952. He moved west to Calgary New Year's Day, 1960. Paul spent twenty-five years as a leader in the Boy Scout organization, and as a member and president of the Latvian Society in England, Toronto and Calgary and as a member of the Kelvin Grove Masonic Lodge.

His hobbies included skiing, photography, woodworking and oil painting. Paul was a kind and loving person and always a gentleman. Always loved, he will be greatly missed. CASAVANT (nee Roux). Elianne "Lily" Marie On September 22, 2001, Elianne Casavant passed away peacefully at the age of 87. She is survived by her three daughters, Jeanette Carter (Jack), Helen Mitchell-Kilworth (David), Lillian Di Ciano (Louie); eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Laura, Marie F. and Mary; and nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Raymond John, her grandson Raymond Carter, eight sisters, seven brothers, and her parents, Samuel and Eugenie.

This is a sad event for all whose lives she touched and yet one of great joy as we know she is in Heaven with Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior. Predeceased by her husband Dr. Edward C. Eddy, Ruth is survived by her sons, Edward Constant Eddy of New Westminster, B.C.; J.

Brian Eddy and his wife Judy of Calgary; and daughter Connie Eddy of Lethbridge, AB. 'Nanny' will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Tobi Cawthra and her husband Scott of Peace River, AB, and Dawn and John Eddy of Calgary. Ruth was born in Flint, Michigan on March 21, 1917 and grew up in Kitchener, Ontario. There she participated in badminton, tennis and golf at the Granite Club. She worked as a model and in various supervisory capacities at Woolworth's.

Ruth married Dr. Edward C. Eddy just before the war. Beginning their married life in Brantford, Ontario, they moved to Calgary in 1952. Until his death in 1974, Dr.

Eddy was a Veterinarian and had the loving support of his wife in his professional endeavors. She served as President of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association Ladies Auxiliary. Ruth and Edward were also active in their support of Military and University of Toronto Alumni circles. Ruth was also predeceased by her sister June and her husband Edward Campbell, but kept in faithful contact with her nieces, Mrs. Suzanne Kushuba and Mrs.

Debbie Arnott and Mrs. Carol Southward and Ms. Gail Campbell of Michigan and Dr. Charmaine Eddy, Jeanette Dodge and Michelle McFarland of Ontario. Subsequent to raising her family, Ruth took up painting with help from friends Arvella and Gladys.

An avid bridge player, she will be missed by fellow enthusiasts Joyce, Nell and Marie. In her later years she enjoyed visiting with her beloved family and friends, gardening, redecorating her home, and traveling around Alberta with Rosemary, Lois, Gerry and Jean. Her creativity in artistic expression and thoughtful generosity are cherished by her loved ones. Jim served in the Canadian Army from 1949 to 1952, following which he was employed by the C.P.R. in Moose Jaw and Calgary. Andy is survived by his wife Bessie, of forty-six years; eldest son Douglas; son Randall and his wife Kristine, and grandchildren, Emma and Drew, all of Calgary; and youngest son Wade residing in Bogota, Colombia. Andy's eldest brother Russell and family reside in Surrey, B.C. Andy and his twin brother Art were bom to Alfred and Janet Spark of Nipawin, Saskatchewan on June 4, 1931. Andy and Bessie arrived in Calgary in 1956. Andy and his brother Art, Operating Engineers of Local 955, worked in the construction industry for many years changing the skyiine of Calgary.

Andy and Bessie devoted their lives to their children and grandchildren. They traveled about Alberta and B.C. camping in their fifth wheel trailer accumulating a large number of friends over the years. Andy loved his family and friends as he did his work. Andy died with the dignity and tenacity with which he lived.

Andy touched the lives of all who knew him and will be dearly missed. At Andy's request, no Funeral Service will be held. HERITAGE FAMILY FUNERAL SERVICES "Calgary Crematorium Phone: 299-0111. STANLEY -Dr. Donald Russell A lifelong resident of Edmonton and a true Edmontonian, Dr.

Donald Stanley, passed away quietly Friday at his home with his family in attendance. In his later years, Dr. Stanley suffered from the debilitating effects of Parkinson's disease. He maintained a very positive attitude and his good sense of humour throughout his illness. Dr.

Stanley was a distinguished member of the engineering profession and involved in many community activities including the Commonwealth Games held in Edmonton. His pioneering work in the area of environmental engineering did much to improve the quality of life of people in many parts of the world. His achievements were honored over the years with many national and international awards, the latest being the Alberta Order of Excellence in 1998. Donald Russell Stanley was born in Edmonton in 1917. His formal education began with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta in 1940.

Following military service as an Engineering Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1942 to 1945, he became the first Director of Sanitary Engineering for the Government of Alberta. During this period, he received his Masters and Doctorate in Environmental Engineering at Harvard University receiving both a Rockefeller Foundation and a Government of Canada Fellowship. In 1954, he founded D. R. Stanley and Associates a one man firm that has evolved into the worldwide company that is now Stantec Inc.

Hockey was a passion inherited from his father, Barney Stanley, a professional hockey player who is in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Don played for the University of Alberta's Golden Bears hockey team, the Edmonton Flyers team and the Edmonton Mercuries that won the World Championships in 1950. Golf was another sport that Don played with great skill and a fierce competitiveness. He will be remembered for his joy of life, and his interest in and contributions to his community and profession. Left to celebrate life are his wife Joan; and their three children, Mary Louise (husband Tony) of Vancouver, BC, Russell, and Donald (wife Lin); and three grandsons, Russell, Thomas and Christopher.

His many relatives and friends throughout the world will also mourn the loss of Dr. Stanley, a man who truly loved life, people and his profession. Maureen, aged 66, had lived in Calgary for over thirty years. She is survived by her son Quynn, and her brother, David McClure.

Her mother Ruth predeceased her last month. Both Maureen and Ruth will be greatly missed by family and friends. Marion lived in Halifax most of her life with the exception of the period of time when she and Jack lived in Liverpool and raised their family. Marion, having been raised the only child of Almore (Doc) and Kathryn Gibson, was very proud of having had such a large family, who were her pride and joy. She moved to Calgary in June of 1998. Marion is survived by her children, Eleanor Brucks (Don) of Calgary, Catherine Randall of Halifax, David Randall (Brenda) of Bedford, Marion Croft (Peter) of Digby, Lorraine Randall of Calgary, Dorothy Clayre Charlton (Gary) of Halifax, Patricia Randall of Calgary and Suzanne Goodwin (Allan) of Calgary. She is also survived by a daughter-in-law Jessie Randall (Milton); fourteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Marion was predeceased by her husband John Joseph Randall (Jack), and her eldest son John Alfred Randall.
