Chargers Strong Balanced Wednesday, August 23, 1972 The Evening SAN DIEGO (AP) After a trading blitz by Coach Bar land Svare, the San Diego Chargers are the strongest and best balanced been in years and loom as a potent challenger for the title in the American Football Conference West. Vet the schedule they face is foreboding. On successive weekends in October the Chargers meet Oakland. Baltimore, Miami, Detroit and Kansas City. Then they start November off against the world champion Dallas Cowboys.

Other opponents include Cleveland and San Francisco. But the Chargers of 1972 are not the Chargers of 1971, whose 6-8 record included losses to Pittsburgh, Houston and Denver. Svare has seen to that with his trading. The 41-year-old coach who served as San general manager until Sid Gillman resigned last year has made 18 trades since taking the helm. The Charger offense led the AFC in gaining yardage last year and shouid be even better this season now that Svare has added the running power of ex-Cowboy Duane Thomas and ex-Cardinal Cid Edwards to the outstanding passing ability of quarterback John Hadl.

Thomas, however, has yet to report for work. And the defense, third worst in the NFL last season. received a complete overhaul by a former linebacker and defensive coach. The Chargers boast a new front four featuring ex-Ram David Jones and Lionel Aldridge at ends. Jones, 33, is a former all-pro who was injured last season.

Linebackers Bob Babich and player-coach Rick Redman have been joined by ex-Eagle Tim Rossovich and ex-Patriot Ed Philpott. However, an injury may sideline Rossovich for the season. And while the defensive backfield remains intact from last year, it is reported much improved under the guidance of rookie assistant coach and former all-pro Willie Wood. At 32, quarterback Hadl is coming off the finest of his 10 years as a pro. Last year Hadl led all NFL passers in attempts with 431, completions with 233, yards gained with 3,075 and touchdowns with 21.

But Hadl probably be passing as much this year under the ball-control emphasis stressed by new offensive coach Bob Schnelker, for seven years an assistant at Green Bay. And he shouldn't have to with Thomas, Edwards and Mike Garrett in ihe backfield. When he does, however, he be hurting for targets. Gary Garrison in six pro seasons has never caught fewer than 40 passes and has averaged better than 20 yards per catch in each of the last four years. Ex-Cardinal Dave Williams will likely alternate with Charger veteran Jerry LeVias at the other wide receiver spot.

be backed up by Chuck Dicus. In addition, the Charger offense has an all-conference guard in Walt Sweeney and an able, experienced tight-end in Pettis Norman. And there is confidence and high hope on the team despite the fearsome schedule. NFLers Lick Hurts ASSOCIATED PRESS A separation of the collarbone has knocked New York No. 1 quarterback Randy Johnson out of action, although the injury is not as serious as the one which recently sidelined Dallas passer Roger Staubach.

who took over the starting role when the Giants traded Fran Tarkenton to Minnesota following the 1971 National Football League season, suffered the separation just below the shoulder of his throwing arm, the team said Tuesday, and will miss at least three weeks of action. Staubach may miss the entire season season due to his shoulder separation. The injury occurred on the final play of the game last Sunday against the New York Jets when- Johnson slipped and John Little of the Jets fell on him. The backup quarterbacks are Ed Baker and Norm Snead Injuries were also reported on Tuesday by the Cleveland Browns. Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams.

Rookie defensive end Lester Sims, the second-round draft choice from Alabama State who had been counted on heavily, has apparently been lost for the season, the team said He suffered torn cartilage in his right knee Sunday against Detroit and was to undergo surgery today. The Eagles said middle linebacker Steve Zabel. who gained a starting berth when Tim Rossovich was traded to San Diego, also suffered torn cartilage in his right knee in practice Tuesday but Philadelphia said he is expected to be back in time for the regular season opener Sept. 17. Kermit Alexander, corner- back for the Rams, will be out four to six weeks with a broken elbow suffered in 'the exhibition game against Oakland.
