BIO CALGARY HERALD Tuesday. April 9. 2002' Arcs Styik Musicians threaten legal action KIWANIS MUSIC FESTIVAL Calgary's Craig cracks T.O. market The hearing is open to the public. Global sent a letter to the CRTC accusing Craig Broadcasting of failing to live up to the promises it made in securing A-Channel licences for Calgary and Edmonton in 1996.

The letter said A-Channel is behind schedule in spending about $2 million a year on new TV production and that the broadcaster is i w- -v The Canadian Press MONTREAL Musicians with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra are threatening to take legal action to stop what they say is harassment by music director Charles Dutoit. The Quebec Musicians Guild accused the world-renowned Dutoit on Monday of "harassment, offensive behaviour and complete lack of respect for the musicians." Madeleine Careau, general manager of the orchestra, said the union move "was a strategy of negotiation and I do not appreciate it" Dutoit was unavailable for comment Monday. Careau said negotiations for a new contract had been underway since January, eight months before the end of the current collective agreement, because management hoped to avoid a strike like the one that occurred two years ago at the end of the last collective agreement. Dutoit has been music director of the MSO since 1977 and also serves as director of the Or-chestre national de France and music director of the Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo. Under his direction, the MSO has won two Grammy Awards and one Juno.

But broadcasters TV licences in Alberta, Manitoba are up for review BOB BLAKEY Calgary Herald A -Channel owner Craig Broadcasting scored a major broadcasting victory Monday by winning a licence for a new Toronto TV station. The approval by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission came two days before A-Channel goes before the broadcast regulator in Calgary for permission to continue running two TV stations in Alberta for the next seven years. Craig Broadcasting will now launch Toronto One, an English-language service with a rebroad-casting transmitter in the Hamilton area. It will distributed on the UHF band, but most of the potential five million customers in the region will receive it on cable systems. The CRTC also granted a new station to Rogers Broadcasting.

"It's an exciting day for our company," Craig Broadcasting president Drew Craig said Monday." "It's a big deal." Craig was victorious over other applicants for a Toronto station, including Torstar Corp. and Can West Global Communications, which owns the Calgary Herald and Global Television (Ch. 7-2). While the battle for Toronto is over, there could be echoes of it at the Calgary CRTC hearing, which is scheduled for three days beginning at 9:30 a.m. on April 10 at the Metropolitan Centre, 323 4th Ave.

The Today book club will meet once a month and ask best-selling authors to recommend work from a lesser-known writer. The 30-minute segment will be hosted by Katie Couric and Matt Lauer. Publishing executives learned to treasure a selection by Winfrey's book club because it often sent sales soaring. The talk-show host, who began her club in 1996, featured books once a month at its peak.

Her last two picks, A Fine Balance and Fall on Your Knees, were both by Canadian authors. Nitty Gritty may whoop it up here According to www.pollstar.com, a popular online source for concert information, country legends The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will be in Calgary July 7, during the Calgary Stampede. The concert venue is named as Desperados on Pollstar, but that may be up in the air as Desperados has officially closed its doors. The new owner, Paul Vickers, who also owns Cowboys, The Drink and a number of other local watering holes, seeks to rename the establishment. producing less local prograniming than the 31.5 hours per week defined as a condition of licence.

"We therefore recommend that the commission require the licensee (A-Channel) to fulfil, in its Drew Craig entirety, its condition of licence, before the end of the current licence term." "What they're saying there is erroneous," Drew Craig said. "They basically took a very micro view of what we did, and we've overachieved. We're doing more than we said we'd do. "We're spending way more money than we said we'd spend, so they're patently wrong." Craig said the CRTC will get the details this week. "We're going to use the (Calgary) hearing as an opportunity to defend our position." A-Channel wasn't originally scheduled to face a licence renewal application for another two years, but the CRTC has agreed to "rationalize" Craig Broadcasting's licence terms in Alberta and Manitoba so they expire at the same time, Craig said.

The new A-Channel licences in Calgary and Edmonton, if approved, will be valid for seven years. 1 Mmit 'IH 11 i4 Available in Black KidBlack PatentCamel KidIvory.
