Edmund Maier of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at the age of 69 years. Born an ethnic German, in Chodziez, Poland, where she was baptized and confirmed, Phyllis was the daughter of the late Benita and Otto Mielke. After fleeing the Soviet occupation of Poland in 1947 and residing briefly as a refugee in Duisberg, Germany, she immigrated to Canada in 1950, living first in Camrose, AB and then settling in Edmonton, AB. She married Edmund in 1953 and in 1959 their son, Harry, was born. In 1960, she moved to Mannville to help Ed build a fledgling hotel business.

In 1966, the family moved to Calgary, again to pursue hotel keeping. Phyllis was a pillar member of Hope Lutheran Church. She distinguished herself by acts of compassionate service undertaken unselfconsciously, far from the limelight, especially at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, where she volunteered weekly for eighteen years. The trials and tragedies of post-war Europe, her suffering as an expellee and a refugee, and the building of a new life in Canada convinced her of the preciousness of life, the indispensability of Christian faith, and the enduring values of generosity, compassion, hospitality, integrity and human industry. These were her foundation, ennobling her to become a remarkable woman, cherished and loved by countless people.

Her lively sense of humour and outspoken nature combined with humility and loving-kindness made her unforgettable. Beloved wife, mother, Oma, sister, aunt and friend: ThanK you for your witness and for light shining forth the love of God. We love you so much.
