eg CO j E o at e "S 5 IK z Q Effort renewed for rides park By OWEN FITZGERALD The city Parks Department is trying once again to lure developers to the old Steeplechase Park site in Coney Island to open a new amusement parK mere. It began advertising for would-be developers this week in the City Record, asking them to make proposals for an amusement park on the 12-acre site bounded bv W. 16th and W. 19th Sts. between tun Ave. and the Boardwalk. Towering above the vacant and littered parcel is the once-proud Parachute Jump, a landmark but also a rusted steel skeleton. A study by the city agency is under way to determine its fate. "We don't think the Parachute Jump, has much viability. It will be costly to repair and it is a question whether any developer would want it. Even though it is on the National Register of Historic bites, that would not prevent its demolition" said 'Wendell Levister, deputy assistant parks commissioner for revenue. Also on the grounds are the remains of several amusement and thrill rides which an operator abandoned after a long court fight with the city. The city acquired the site in 1969, but it wasn't until June 1981 that the courts finally settled a condemnation award for $1,055,814. The site where Frank C. Tilyou opened his world-renowned Steeplechase Park in 1897 was eyed in recent years by Coney Island promoters as the logical location for a gambling casino, if and when the State Legislature and voters approved casinos. The issue was shelved in 1981, when the Legislature failed to pass the issue for a second time and to submit the question to voters throughout New York State. The casino issue is at least three or more years away now, according to observers. "There has been no negative reaction from Coney Island interests about our attempts to lease the site for a new amusement park," said Levister. "Indeed, there was clamor before from Coney Island, but that was before the Legislature dumped the casino-gambling legislation," he added. if'y' 1,1 " f " LL ' " -' RENT TO 1 I DON'T DELAY OWN PLAN I CALL TODAY MEW YORK 887-5151 NEW JERSEY 673-7600 CALL NOW ROHO TV RENTALS & PURCHASE PLAN Cowing Brooklyn.
