Jim was born in Calgary on July 7, 1953. He is the beloved husband of Dianne (Durand) and devoted father of three sons, Shawn, Jeffrey and Dustin. Jim leaves behind many family members including his parents, Jack and Cora Backs; his brothers, Richard (Delores) and Steven; his sisters, Mary Anne, Bev (Bud) and Diane (Dean).

He will be missed by his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Jim was very involved with Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and Ventures for the past fourteen years at Temple Troop 195. He loved to camp with his family and was often found in Kananaskis and Camp Gardner, enjoying the outdoors. She was involved in the West Hillhurst Community Association from the 1950's to the 1980's, as President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Past President. She worked at the University of Calgary in Student Programs and Services until she retired at the age of sixty-five. Following retirement, Mary was very involved with the West Hillhurst Community Association She was also involved in the Native Calgarian Society, the Royal Canadian Legion No. 264 Branch, and the TOPS program. Mary leaves to mourn, two daughters, Diane (Norm) Fletcher and Lorraine Heming; a son Neil (Corie) Hockley; eight grandchildren, Ken, Cherie, Marlene (Dean), Colleen (Richard), Dave, Barb, Sean, Sarah; and six greatgrandchildren.

She is also survived by a sister Vera Ferguson; a sister-in-law Eileen Sumner; a niece Janice; a nephew Jim (Sarah), and their children. Deaths 860 DIAMOND- Reid Russell Beloved husband, son and brother Passed away peacefully in his home in Toronto, February 17,2001. Reid was born February 8, 1958, in Steinbach, Manitoba. Reid graduated from Dr.

E.P. Scarlett High School (Calgary) and Ontario College of Art (Toronto). Reid was a celebrated musician winning a Juno Award for Best Instrumental Act for his work with the innovative musical group Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet. The group's music is internationally recognized through live performances and recordings as well as the theme song and music for the television program Kids in the Hall. Reid's musical career took him from the Shadowy Men to his most recent recording and performance group Phonocomb.

Reid's musical career, while still in the instrumental genre with Phonocomb, reached new personal heights in both the performance and recording fields. In addition to Reid's musical accomplishments, he was also a highly regarded artist being awarded recognition grants on numerous occasions from both the Canada and Ontario Arts Councils. Reid's use of the written word brought a powerful impact to his art. Reid always believed in the power of the written and spoken word and his art reflected this belief in a highly creative way. To this end, Reid was also a published author of short stories, articles and reviews.

Reid's most recent works have combined his musical talents with his artistic insights. These endeavours have been hailed as a progressive and dynamic combination of film and recorded, as well as live music. Reid sat as Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Toronto's Mercer Art Gallery as well as a board member advisor for numerous other Toronto art galleries. In spite of Reid's challenging personal schedule he found time to curate successful art shows in the Toronto area. Reid's contributions to both the musical and arts worlds have touched many people.

Internationally recognized in both the disciplines of art and music, Reid's contributions to the world have been sadly cut short by his passing. He is survived by his loving wife Marjorie of fifty-nine years; his devoted son Dr.

Robert (Rose); and one daughter Jill (Russ) McNeil; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother Vern (Norma) and numerous nieces and nephews. Roy was born in Calgary on July 10, 1913 and lived his entire life in the city. In 1939, Roy joined the Navy and was in active duty for his country during World War II. Upon his discharge in 1945 he returned to Calgary and was employed by the City of Calgary Transit System for twenty-nine years, retiring in 1975.

Roy lived and loved life. As a young man he was a pitcher in fastball and was a semi-pro hockey player. In later years it was curling and golf, but his greatest love was the Calgary Stampeders. He was a fifty-plus year season ticket holder. He was so proud of the fact that he had never missed one home game even leaving the hospital in a wheelchair after surgery so as not to break his record.

A very special thank you to all the nurses and auxiliary staff of Unit 3A at the Colonel Belcher for their care of Roy during his last years. Margaret was born in Edmonton on April 25, 1908. She spent her early years in Rossland, BC, before returning to Alberta where she met and married Clifford Hills Heighes of Coaldale, AB. They moved to Calgary during World War Il and have resided here since.

Margaret was a well-known seamstress, sewing many bridal outfits and many other creations. She was a seamstress at Woodward's for several years before retiring. Margaret is survived by three children, daughter Winnifred Mary (Gerald) Smith; two sons, Gordon Bryan (Joyce) both of Calgary, and Leroy Douglas (Jan) of Elkford, BC. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Margaret was predeceased by her husband Clifford in 1966 and an infant son in 1934.

Hookway, a lifetime resident of Calgary and promoter of the spirit of Calgary, died of cancer, Sunday morning, February 18, 2001 in her apartment in Trinity Lodge, 1111 Glenmore Trail S.W. Born November 24, 1918, she was the daughter of Ernest A. Hookway (former City Comptroller, 1931-1951 and City Commissioner of Finance, 1952-1954) and of Lilian A. Hookway (nee Lilian Gubb).

Carol was a graduate of the Hollingshead Business College; she was an organizer, a writer, pianist, organist and a cheerleader for co-workers. For twenty-eight years Carol was Secretary-Treasurer of Kenway Co. maker of exquisite hand carved leather goods from saddles and personal effects to artistic wall coverings, until the business was sold in 1967. Then she became Secretary (and sometimes-interim treasurer) to the Anglican Bishop of Calgary, serving twelve years with Bishop Goodman and three years with Bishop Curtis. Her superior intellect, drive, wit and concern for others will be missed by many.

Many relatives in England but only one in North America, Dr. E.H. Buckley, survive her with his family in Ithaca, New York. A Memorial Service will be held at her life-long church, St. Barnabas Anglican Church, 1407 7 Avenue N.W.

He returned to Calgary where he worked with the credit union movement, completing his career with the Canadian Red Cross.

He is survived two sisters, Madelyn and Doris; two brothers, Reg and Bill; his children, Larry (Yvonne), Judi, Todd and Mark; grandchildren, Luc, Jodi-Lyn, Heather, Christine, Ryan, Leah, Noah, Adam, and Sheila; as well as many other relatives for whom he had great affection. He is predeceased by his wife Sheila, two sons, Harold and Mike, and a grandson Michael. Walter was born on November 1, 1916 in Dublany, Poland. Walter served in the British Army during World War Il reaching the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. He received many medals including the Victoria Cross and Cross of Valour. After the war Walter emigrated to Canada and moved to the Lethbridge area. He married Jozefa Oleszinski on April 23, 1949 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Calgary.

They had three children, Lucia, Karl and Wanda. Walter is a past president of the Polish Canadian Association of Calgary, Secretary of Polish Combatants Association, Vice President of both the Polish Canadian Congress of Alberta and the Polish Canadian Congress of Canada. In the 1960's Walter had the pleasure of hosting Cardinal Karol Woityla and Robert Kennedy in Calgary. He was instrumental in the building of the Queen of Peace Church, as well as the Polish Canadian Cultural Centre. More importantly, Walter helped many new Polish Immigrants become established in the Calgary area.

He will be sorely missed by his family and the many people he touched throughout his life. Walter is survived by his children, Lucja and Harry Assen, and Wanda Krokosinski and daughter Kade, all of Calgary, AB, and Karl and Deborah and their children, Ryan and Chelsea of Vancouver, B.C.; and two brothers, Kasper and Karol of Poland. Walter was predeceased by his wife Jozefa, brothers, Jozef and Jan, and sisters, Aniela and Viktoria. May is survived by her children, Marion (Keith) Taylor of Fort Macleod and Ron (Norma) Lock of Okotoks; nine grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. May is also survived by her sister Violet Wallace of Calgary. She was predeceased by her husband George in 1998.

During May's years, she played the piano and organ at the Okotoks United Church, and the Royal Purple functions, had her own orchestra, as well as taught piano lessons to many people in the community. Born into a family of nineteen children, Wilkie moved to Exshaw at the age of six months and lived there his entire life except for service in the Second World War, where he served in Italy, Sicily, Britain and Holland.
