the heart of the Downtown section and the New Corner Restaurant on Eighth Ave. in Bay Ridge, are so well thought of by the master cookers that they have included recipes from both in their new cook book. The cook book lists more than 300 recipes from what the organization says are the finest restaurants in the U.S. and while more than 298 of those restaurants are not in Brooklyn, two are. Both restaurants will be honored at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Central Park South next Wednesday with a reception and a demonstration of recipes by the chefs.

WHILE MANHATTAN, where everybody knows the apartments are too small to eat in, has 17 restaurants mentioned, the chefs' group said that Brooklyn is outpacing Cleveland, which has only one restaurant listed. Tony Vigilante, manager of the Bay Ridge gourmet haven, was calm about having his restaurant included in the book. Vigilante explained that New Corner began as a pizza parlor in 1936 and, according to the book is now said to be the largest-volume Italian-cuisine restaurant in Brooklyn and date back to the day in 1879 when the carriage trade began hitching their horses in front of the glass doors. "We have simple, good food," said Gertrude Dewey. Her husband Edward's family has owned the eating spot since 1919 and both cherish the antique flavor.

"We are a city landmark both inside and out and have just been named to the national and state fflhse oil! ft3evjs historic registry," said Dewey. Dewey and Vigilante are both planning to be in Manhattan for the reception and demonstrations and are looking forward to even more cook book mentions. you?
