Entertainment BIO CALGARY HERALD Tuesday, January 5, 1999 U.S. TELEVISION GORD KELLY CFCN broadcaster retires from airwaves Canada's Newman loses co-anchor job at ABC 4 Calgary Herald Veteran CFCN broadcaster Gord Kelly is retiring from the airwaves after 41 years of service. The white-haired, warm-voiced Kelly is one of Calgary's most familiar on-air personalities. He will retire from TV news reporting as of Feb. 1, he said Monday.

He and the station (Ch. 3-4) are working on plans to bring him back occasionally on special projects, such as stories requiring in-depth research, he said. Kelly, 62, is by far the longest-standing employee at CFCN. Tm anxious to hand that mantle off to someone else he said with a chuckle. Born in Lac La Biche, Kelly grew up in northern Peace River Country, the son of a railroad man.

He joined CFCN Radio in 1957 as an announcer and disc jockey. When CFCN Television was launched in i960, Kelly's was among the first faces seen on the air. Over the years he worked on-air and behind the scenes in roles such as program manager, in radio and TV. He co-hosted a TV magazine program, Today From Calgary, for about 15 years. He has been a TV news reporter ing back "warmth with intelligence and a sense of family." It wasn't clear how long Sawyer and Gibson will do the job before handing Good Morning America to a new set of hosts.

Sawyer, whose star power is second only to that of Barbara Walters, said it will probably be "a few months." "We'll do it for as long as it takes," Gibson said. Good Morning America has sunk well behind NBC's Today show in the ratings in the last few years. The slide continued when McRee took over for Joan Lun-den in September 1997 and Newman replaced Gibson last spring. Sawyer and Gibson will start on Jan. 18.

McRee, who is pregnant, will be a Los Angeles-based ABC News correspondent Good Morning America premiered in 1975 with co-anchors Nancy Dussault and David Hart-man. The show's current hosts, Canadian Kevin Newman and Lisa McRee, will be given new assignments. Newman, a former host of CBC-TVs Midday who became co-anchor of Good Morning America last spring, will become a correspondent for ABC's Nightline. It's a return to morning TV for Sawyer and Gibson.

Sawyer was host of the CBS Morning News from 1981-84, and Gibson ended years as Good Morning America host just last April ABC News president David Westin said the network's news division wanted to make a strong statement that it is committed to improving the program by bring v.
