JENNIFER PARTRIDGE Calgary Herald He's bright, handsome and still on the right side of 40. With more than two decades of experience in the broadcasting business, he's also garnered an enviable reputation as a high-profile journalist both in Canada and south of the border.

And, as of Sept. 4, Kevin Newman will be the new face of Global National News, slated to air weeknights at 6:30. Newman, 42, who many will remember from his short stint as the co-host of ABC's Good Morning America, was in Calgary for Tuesday night's Global Television Fall Launch 2001, showcased in front of a packed crowd at the Fairmont Palliser. The evening included a sneak peek at which of Calgary's favourite shows including proven prime-time successes as Friends, Frasier and Will Grace will air in September, as well as programs that TV types are touting as promising new series. And who could forget the one show that people will actually re-arrange their lives around Survivor HI, set in the stark beauty of Africa.

Newman is excited about being the new "show-and-tell guy." "What we need is another voice in national news," Newman said.

"So our challenge is to find our voice and to be a place where Canadians will go to find the Global voice in news. There's too much of the same voice in national news in Canada, I think. So the more that we can develop another agenda, a different voice, I think the more successful we'll be." vision Network, is national news. That's where Global National News comes in a big-budget, new national newscast based in Vancouver. Toronto-born Newman was the logical choice for what's being hyped as a fast, focused, cutting-edge 30 minutes of national and international news aimed directly at the young urban professional.

"He's very talented to begin with," says Rusnak. "He's also a very high-profile Canadian journalist, someone who's had good exposure and good training A-Channel tempted by reality TV Krall's coming Calgary Herald Grammy and Juno Award winner Diana Krall will be returning to Calgary with a full orchestra when she performs two dates at the Jack Singer Concert Hall on Oct 13 and Oct. 14. The shift also helps us because we're operating on mountain time and are simulcast with stations operating on Pacific time." The station is adding talk-show heavyweights The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Live with Regis and Kelly to its lineup. It will also bring back favourite sitcom reruns such as Frasier and Friends for its weekday schedule, as well as introducing NBC's Just Shoot Me, which will go into syndication this fall.

The station will also shift late-night news from 10 p.m. to p.m., which will allow for expanded prime-time prograrnming, and will reduce the frequency of its Prime Time Ticket movie from seven nights a week to four.
