I COLLEGE DASKETDALL Kentucky rips Florida 102-48; UConn loses From wlra services as the invisible man in the first half, woke up in the second half with 12 points to join subs Billy Goodwin (14) and Larry Washington (12) as the only other Redmen besides McKoy and Gilroy in double figures. McKoy's 18 points and seven rebounds were tops for St, John's. Seton Hall came into the game with the rep of playing tough and close even in a losing cause. The Pirates, now 6-9, have lost four games by less than three points. "We came into this game thinking we could win," said Bill Raftery.

"And now we come away thinking we can win next time." Revenge is next on the agenda for Carnesecca's team. The Redmen travel to Syracuse Saturday to try to make amends for a one-point loss to the Orangemen last season. "This one we had to win," Carnesecca said. "The disipline is getting there in the end of games. It's not as good as I'd like it, but it's getting there." Another tough defeat didn't help the Pirates, losers in three of their last four.

"We're a young team," said Callandrillo. "Mentally, close losses get young guys down. We just have to hang on." "SETON HALL (M) Oevertx) 3 3-7 9. McNeil 3 5-S 11. Collins 2 0-1 4, Plcclnlch 7 0-0 14, Callandrillo 10 2-2 22.

'Redmen whip Seton 73-62; 1 8 for McKoy By MIKE McALARY There have been nights when Wayne McKoy seemed to be playing with an invisible ball and chain attached to his right sneaker.

The 6-foot-9 center has been a model of inconsistency for the Redmen this season until Wednesday night's game against Seton Hall. Seton Hall coach Bill Raftery might have beaten St. John's Wednesday night if McKoy had chosen to continue his big sleep. Instead, Raftery had the misfortune of running into the real McKoy. That meant the difference between an upset victory for Raftery and a 73-62 loss to the Redmen.

McKoy held the show together with 10 first-half points as the Redmen worked to a slow 32-27 lead: Only Frank Gilroy, who finished with 12 points, was helpful in the first half. "Three guys had a tough first half," said Redmen coach Lou Carnesecca, -referring to his other three starters. "But they came back and that's what you have to get to win. I liked the way we hung in there." SETON HALL, riding a 22-point effort by guard Dan Callandrillo, stayed close most of the game and pulled to within one point, 38-37, after Callandrillo hit a running layup with 15:44 to play. Carnesseca got two quick buckets from Curtis Redding that seemed to awaken the rest of his teammates and get the Redmen rolling to their 12th victory in 15 games.

David Russell, who replaced McKoy Lexington, Ky. Sam Bowie scored 29 points to help No. 6 Kentucky rebound from two straight losses and the Wildcats handed Florida its worst defeat ever, a 102-48 rout in a Southeastern Conference game Wednesday night. Kentucky, which lost consecutive conference games to Alabama and Ken- tucky (12-3 overall and 5-2 in the SEC) got 17 points each from Dirk Min-niefield and Melvin Turpin. The Wildcats shot 59.

Florida (8-6, 2-5)( was led by Vernon Delancy with 12 points. Villanova 63, Connecticut 59 Philadelphia Tom Sienkiewicz scored 16 points to lead Villanova to a 63-59 win over 17th-ranked Connecticut in a Big East game. UConn is 12-2 overall and 3-2 in the league. Villanova is 11-4 and 5-2. Mike McKay led the Huskies with 16 and Chuck Aleksinas added 14.

Connecticut, down by nine points in the second half, drew within three with 4:49 to go but Stewart Granger scored four of Villanova's next five points to open a 59-51 lead. Notre Dame 60, USF 75 South Bend, Ind. John Paxson hit a 20-foot jumper with six seconds left to rally Notre Dame (11-3) to an 80-75 victory over San Francisco (14-3). Paxson, who scored 22 points, added lona 74, Niagara 61 Gary Springer scored 31 points to lead lona over Niagara 74-61 at New Rochelle. I want to see my horse in person, not just on paper. Here at the track, I can study his reaction to the running surface, I can study the tote board and find out what other smart handicappers think. I can even get a close-up look at my pick to see if he's skittish or nervous.

If I like him after all that, I'll bet him, then cheer him down to the wire. You know, nobody in New York pays higher prices on winning horses. Then, I relive that magic moment all over again, watching an instant replay of the stretch run in slow motion on one of Aqueduct's TV monitors. Like I said, I know where to bet."
