CALGARY HERALD Sunday, April 12, 1998 C5 Entertainment THE SOAPS Some football team missed out on getting good-looking coach Acting be Taylor got a law degree. But he soon discovered the corporate life was not for him and headed to Los Angeles. "An acting teacher had me on stage alone, in a chair, and slowly dimmed the lights until only the spotlight remained," he recalls. "I was in the light and there was darkness out in front of me. There was such a rush! It was like coming out of the tunnel and out onto the football field.

I really liked it." And he still does. "I'm an adrenaline junkie," he explains. "When I hear it's like kickoff time. I still get that rush when I sit in my Days dress LILANA NOVAKOVICH For the Calgary Herald As the old song goes, "you gotta be a football heroto get along with the beautiful girls." Josh Taylor, who plays Roman Brady on Days Of Our Lives, would have been a football coach had he not become an actor. His father George was a coach.

But Taylor hasn't done too badly as an actor. He's the first to admit he's been a bit of a rogue in his day. Taylor's mother died during childbirth, IN BRIEF 'I did it for bride says of new name NEW YORK Jada Pinkett created a stir at the Golden Globe Awards by doing something women do all the time at least out-' side Hollywood. The newlywed bride of Will Smith stunned fans, family and friends with her introduction as fada Smith. "I did it for Will," she says in the May issue of InStyle -magazine.

"It was my cute little introduction to our married life. He didn't know I was doing it. He didn't go toUae awards, so he saw it on TV." I-oretta Lynn warns against implants NASHVILLE, TENN. Country singer Loretta Lynn is warning women about the dangers of silicone breast implants. "You women out there that have breast implants, it is dangerous.

Have them jerked out," Lynn says in the April 21 issue of Country Weekly magazine. The 63-year-old entertainer had her 25-year-old im- plants removed in January because of leaking silicone that had attached to nerve endings, her rib cage, back- bone and tissue. Facelift for Locklear? NEW YORK At age 36, TV sexpot Heather Locklear is feeling the heat. "What's difficult in this business is that you have to look in the mirror every day," Locklear says in Redbook. "You have to look nice and your hair has to be a certain style, and that makes you overly aware of how you look." For the Melrose Place star, the constant need to main- tain her looks makes her seriously consider getting a facelift during daily mirror sessions.

"I think we share the same values. Like Jed, Roman is a man of the earth." Hot Spot: Lynn Herring has a hectic schedule. She appears on Port Charles as Lucy Coe. She has two young sons and husband, Wayne Northrop, who plays Rex on PC. She juggles two homes, one in Los Angeles's Topanga Canyon and the other on a ranch in central California.

The family has a menagerie of pets including dogs, cats, and the "Cluck Family," a collection of chickens. She gets up at 5:30 a.m.to cater to the animals. An air force brat, Herring is used to constant flux. She attended 15 different schools in 10 states and Puerto Rico. She swears all her activity accounts for her admirable figure.

She doesn't go to the gym, but plays soccer and one-on-one basketball with her boys. As for the arm muscles, she attributes them to ranching, a regimen of "lifting hay, raking the stalls, doing ranch work, holding the kids and riding horses." Have you heard: Another World will not be renewing Charles Keating's (Carl) contract. Fans will certainly miss the wonderful actor when he is written out this spring. Other actors who got the axe from their respective shows this past week are Barbara Crampton (Maggie on Bold And Beautiful) who leaves in early May and Days Of Our Lives stars Steve Wilder (Jack) and Stephanie Cameron (Jennifer), whose last air date will be closer to the end of that month. Peter Barton (Eddie on Sunset Beach) is also being written out during May ratings sweeps.

Deidre Hall (Marlena on Days) has re-signed with the show so fans can breathe a sigh of relief. There had been rumors that she was thinking of leaving. Ricky Paull Goldin returns to Another World as Dean Frame for one day, airing May 5 Daytime TV newcomer Taylor Stanley joins Another World in the contract role of Remy, a young troublemaker. She begins airing in June. Anthony Herrera makes a brief appearance on As The World Turns as James when the character's hiding place is discovered April 23.

Lauren Woodland joins Sunset Beach as Sara, Meg's younger sister on April 28 Kathleen Noone (Bette on Sunset Beach) will sing on the show at The Deep. The episode airs April 30 John Furey joins All My Children April 29 as a patient in Pine Valley Hospital who will affect many lives. mm I m.mm, 1 ing room and hear my name called to the stage." His first acting job was on Police Story, in the episode starring Angie Dickinson, which spun off into Police Woman. He kept studying and working at odd jobs. He was bartending at Chadney's restaurant across from NBC's Bur-bank studio when he was cast on Days as Chris Kositchek, a role he played (except for a year and a half sabbatical) from 1977-Z7.

During his run as Chris, he was one of the first actors to work concurrently on daytime and primetime TV. For a year and a half, he did his Days job and also played Valerie Harper's pilot husband on Valerie, which later became The Hogan Family. In addition to the re from complications from a blood clot. He was raised by his father and stepmother. "My father (who died on the eve if his 84th birthday) was the most sensitive, kind man I've known," Taylor reflects.

"As my high school football coach, he taught me how to win. But as a father, he taught me how to hug and that it was OK for a man to cry. I learned how to accept people. He never brought one ounce of bigotry into our home." If he got his football mania from his father, Taylor discovered he got his love of acting from his mother, who was a schoolteacher. "My dad told me she was always doing recitals and drama readings.

But I learned that only after I had become an actor." Becoming an actor was always there, somewhere in his subconscious, even as a kid in Chillicothe, 111. jpj 114-if Josh Taylor stars on Days Of Our Lives, curring role of Jack Mckay on Beverly Hills 90210 and the starring role in Riker, Taylor also did a short stint on as Jed Sanders in 1996. "That character was the most like me," he admits, "he had his feet on the earth and his head in the sky. "He was a bit of a good-hearted rogue. Now a lot of what Roman says and does has some similarities to me.

"I especially loved Paul Newman movies," he reminisces. "I always wanted to look more closely into the movie, see what was going on, how he did what he does. But I was into sports, not doing high school plays or community theatre." He treasures his childhood memories. "It was like Tom Sawyer with a football." Indeed, Chillicothe's Taylor Field is named after his father. LULUmttlAi' 1 li 1 rcturesLLj I KrWJ2--" PG NOW PLAYING! Never bowing to the disability, he went on to study law at the University of Pisa. "Law was not for me," he said. "Because I was thinking always about the singing." His duet with British singer Sarah Brightman, Time to Say Goodbye, was a European hit in 1996.

His success in North America came later, following a 1997 U.S. television concert, A Night in Tuscany, which launched Romanza into the CD sales stratosphere. The singer trusts his luck over any passionless career plan. "I just sort of allow my life to unfold," he said. "I haven't planned it out this way.

It's just happened to me." The Associated Press NEW YORK Andrea Bocelli, the blind Italian opera singer whose album Romanza is an international chart-topper, already has more fame than he ever bargained for. "If tomorrow the success goes away for me, it's not a problem," Bocelli says in the April 17 Entertainment Weekly. "I could read, because I love very much to read books. Before I had success I read a lot, and now I don't find the time."
