I 38 Councilman Olivieri dies of cancer at 39 By JANE PERLEZ Antonio Olivieri, Manhattan's Democratic council died today at the age of 39. Olivieri, who had valiantly fought a two-year battle with a cancerous brain tumor and who underwent three operations, died at his home at 36 E. 72d St. Always considered the bright young hope of the liberal wing of the Democratic Party, he was elected in 1977 to the Council, where he took special interest in the elderly and emergency health services. A graduate of Harvard College and Columbia Law School, his political career started in 1970 when he was the first Democrat in 57 years to win the 66th District Assembly seat on the upper East Side.

In 1974, he ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor. HE WAS LAUDED today by his fellow councilman-at-large, Henry Stern, who said, "It's a tragedy. He was a very gifted young man who eared deeply about people. He contributed a lot to the country, not only in politics. It is ironic that a person whose particular concern was health should be taken this way." One of Olivieri's staff members, Jamie Malanowski, said he had spoken with Olivieri by phone last Tuesday.

"We visited him regularly," Malanowski said. "We managed to continue to work on problems with the medical emergency Malanowski said he understood that Olivieri caught a fever last week that his weakened body could not combat. Olivieri had not been at City Hall or his law office for two months. He Antonio Olivieri's spirit was never dampened during the long and painful illness that claimed him. See Manhattan section.

entering the hospital for his last treatment just before Labor Day. Before his third operation in May, Olivieri explained his evident courage this way: "I believe that your attitude has a great deal to do with your cure. If you turn around and say, 'There's nothing I can do, that's it won't help." He is survived by his wife, Frances Reese, and two children, Alesandro, 14, and Francesca, 12. Funeral services were not complete. OBITUARY HERBERT B.

KRONE Lancaster, Pa. (AP) -Herbert B. Krone, 86, known for his annual weather forecasts based on the coloration of woolly bear caterpillars, died Saturday. Krone, who said he had learned forecasting from a Pennsylvania Dutch grandmother, said that dark fuzz on the caterpillars meant a hard winter. In his last forecast in September, Krone examined four woolly bears and found "some were brassy blonds." He predicted a moderate winter.

His forecasts were carried in newspapers from California to London. GEORGE W. HEALY Jr. New Orleans (UPI) -George W. Healy 75, who rose through the ranks from reporter to editor and spent almost half a century with the TimesPicayune, died Sunday after a long Delay vote on Met contract The union representing the Metropolitan Opera chorus, principals and ballet voted today to delay consideration of a new four-year contract.

Members of the American Guild of Musical Artists voted 159 to 10 at the Holiday Inn on W. 57th St. to delay a vote on a proposed pact until the opera house addresses the issues of wage parity with musicians and the length of the work week. The proposal provides wage increases in the first three years and in the final year. Met musicians last week ratified a four-year pact that will raise their average weekly wage from $525 to $734 over the contract's duration.

The 93 musicians also won their demand for a four- week and hefty pension and welfare gains. Met had planned to open on Dec. 1 with an altered schedule. The strike delayed the opening originally set for Sept. 29.

A few of the smaller unions have not yet negotiated with the Met. -Mark Liff Woman, three children die in blaze in Elizabeth home 0861 A New Jersey woman, her two chil- Frank Biales and Robert Yankevichz 465 dren and a 6-year-old nephew died in a were treated for smoke inhalation.
