ENTERTAINMENT CALGARY HERALD Tuesday, May 31 1 994 B5 Novelist earns 'screwball mystery' crown her solve crimes. MacLeod also writes two mystery series set in her native country, using the pen name Alisa Craig. And MacLeod recently published a biography of Mary Roberts Rinehart, a best-selling mystery writer from the early 20th century. Unlike Agatha Christie, Rinehart faded in popularity after her death in 1958 at age 82. MacLeod hopes Had She But Known generates new interest in Rinehart, a pioneer in the genre who "injected humor into the mystery." "I intended the book to be a reintroduction to a woman who was very famous in her day," said MacLeod.

"I'd grown up on her mysteries." MacLeod leads an isolated life in the airy old house she shares with three cats. Recently she sat on a white wicker settee, rubbing the belly of an orange cat named George and discussing the jonquils growing nearby. But underneath the calm exterior, more murders were likely being plotted. "I do use bizarre methods to kill people," she admitted. Robert F.

Canadians compete for organ festival spot By Martin Morrow Calgary Herald Three Canadian organists will compete with 36 of their peers from around the world for a berth at this year's international organ festival in Calgary. John Charron of Windsor, Zion Wu of Burnaby, B.C., and Toronto's Jonathan Brown have been chosen to play the summer semi-final competitions leading up to this fall's Calgary International Organ Festival. Wu and Brown will compete at the North American, South American and Pacific Rim semifinals in Cleveland, Ohio, July 21-23. Charron is taking part in the European semi-finals in Lubeck, Germany, July 27-29.

The semi-final rounds will yield the eight competitors for the second Calgary finals, scheduled for Oct. 6-14 at Jack Singer Concert Hall in the Centre for Performing Arts. The three Canadians are going up against organists from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Sweden and the U.S. The 39 competitors were chosen by the festival's selection group, including artistic director Simon Preston and Centre resident organist Terence Fullerton. "We had fewer applications this time," said festival president Doug Lauchlan on Monday, comparing the numbers with the inaugural festival in 1990.

"But they were the people we wanted to hear from. This is really for people who are ready to begin a serious professional career." The competing musicians were chosen based on various criteria, including where they had studied and experience in performance and other competitions. Lauchlan was particularly excited that four Russian organists are among the competitors going to the Lubeck semi-finals. "Because organ music is not part of the tradition of the Russian Orthodox Church, it's easy to assume that therefore there isn't an organ tradition in Russia, but that's not true. It's based in the conservatories and they have some very fine players.

So we're pleased about that." The festival, held every four years, brings together the world's best young organ players to vie for $30,000 worth of prizes before a panel of distinguished organists. Tickets to the event are now on sale at TicketMaster. bottom on drugs Sinister flavor offset by wacky characters and light-hearted touch By Elizabeth Edwardsen Associated Press DURHAM, Me. Charlotte MacLeod once murdered a man by splashing his face with disfiguring quicklime. She gored another with an ancient spear, and yet another victim met his demise in a swarm of stinging bees.

Recently, a troublemaker fell face first into his chicken pot pie at a coastal Maine inn the recipient of a cyanide capsule. "That wasn't very nice of me," MacLeod says with a sly smile, sitting in a sunny parlor at her 200-year-old home. Yes, despite a few dozen murders, MacLeod is free to roam the pastures and gardens near her rural house. And she's free to commit murder with impressive regularity, with a legion of mystery-reading fans waiting for the next body to drop. Singer's Former lead for Lighthouse awaits sentencing for robberies By Portia Priegert Canadian Press OTTAWA Once Bob McBride had it all his records went gold, he drove a sleek Ferrari and he earned $250,000 a year.

Then the boyish-looking rock singer with the quick smile got hooked on heroin. He lost everything in a tragic spiral down from his 1970s heyday with the Juno-winning band Lighthouse, known for such upbeat tunes as Sunny Days and One Fine Morning. McBride, now a heavy-set 47-year-old with steel gray hair, wept as he pleaded for clemency Monday at his sentencing hearing for twice robbing a downtown Ottawa pharmacy. "You never win with drugs, they win over you," he told Ontario Court Judge Bruce MacPhee. Best single: I Would Die For You, Jann Arden.

"It's just the way I see things," she says.

MacLeod, whose family moved to the Boston area when she was an infant, said she had always wanted to be a writer. But she didn't sell her first mystery novel until she was in her 40s and well into a career writing advertising copy. She now rises early every morning and is at her electric typewriter by 6 a.m. to put in several hours of work. All that typing resulted in two books out this spring.

Something in the Water is the 11th novel in a series featuring Peter Shandy, a horticulture professor at fictitious Balaclava Agriculture College. The Shandy books are just one of MacLeod's series. She has written nine novels in a series featuring Sarah Kelling, a Boston WASP with a boarding house full of outlandish tenants, a family of blue-blood oddballs and a loving husband who helps abuse have left McBride with the fragile health of a 70-year-old. Much of McBride's liver has been destroyed and he has hepatitis a potentially fatal blood infection. He has lost his hearing in one ear and must take insulin twice a day for diabetes.

But McBride, who sang commercial jingles for everything from beer to Jell-0 after leaving Lighthouse, says he still has his singing voice. He wants to put on benefit concerts to raise money for drug-addiction programs. And he hopes to visit schools to warn children about the dangers of drugs. His lawyer, Martin Peters, asked that McBride receive no time in jail or be allowed to serve a 90-day sentence on weekends so he can continue treatment. But Crown lawyer Hillary McCormack, citing a victim-impact letter from a pharmacist who complained she still feels anguish over the robbery, asked that McBride get two years less a day.

He pulled a tuque low over his forehead, wound a scarf up over his face and donned sunglasses before heading into the Glebe Apothecary to demand drugs to feed his $500-a-day habit. Spotted by police after his second robbery, he admitted everything, including several earlier robberies they didn't know about. Then, physically ill from his addiction and filled with remorse for the robberies, McBride stabbed himself six times with a piece of steel in a failed suicide bid. "I was very ashamed at what I'd done I just didn't feel like living," he told the court. McBride, a heroin addict for a decade, said he was clean for two years before the robberies.

The sextet has decided to record its first album of new material since 1978. "We're not restarting a new career under the name Beau Dommage," said group member Michel Rivard, who's had a successful solo career.

"For now it's just an album. It's not impossible well do shows, but nothing's confirmed. Regardless, it'll be limited; we all have things we want to do individually." Formed in 1972, Beau Dommage released its first album two years later, selling a phenomenal 350,000 copies. Three other albums followed before the group dissolved in 1978. Original members Pierre Bertrand, Marie-Michele Des-rosiers, Real Desrosiers, Robert Leger, Michel Hinton and guitarist-singer Rivard are all involved in the new project.
