The WPA Project 1157 was the building of two large class rooms and a large assembly room for the Latin Americans at the North Grammar School, sorely needed accomodations, according to Woody Tullis, project superintendent for Mercedes. The cost to the WPA for the project was $20.753.56. The sponsor, the Mercedes Independent School District, contributed $7,161.00 in second-hand material and personal services. The building is excellently constructed with a firm foundation and joists capable of supporting several stories. It was necessary to make skilled labor from the assortment of common laborers benefitting from the WPA.

It was started November 15, 1935. Project 3123 will cost WPA $4,805.95 and the Mercedes Independent School District will furnish in materials and personal services, $1,484.00. The project, started February 10. 1936. was for two double 84x84 tennis courts of reinforced concrete with brick and sand, the erection of back-stops for the courts, incinerators for all the campi, the repairing of plaster and the painting of school rooms in the North Grammar School.
