Lonnie Wilson, Newcastle, 14.33. 79. Only four points separate today's 10 finalists in saddle bronc. Today's results will be added to the first score for all contestants. Of the other 1989 champions, bull rider Cody Snyder got bucked off, steer-wrestling titlist Craig Butterfield was too long at 7.6 and so was Lee Laskosky at 15.5 in calf roping.

David Reid, the defending co-champion in saddle bronc, got no time for "missing out" on Melinda. Ed Gentles, the other co-winner, did not enter this year. Even world' champion saddle broncer Clint Johnson a noted Calgary killer with three $50,000 wins at the Stampede and an Olympic '88 Rodeo title was eliminated. He could only manage a 73 score on a re-ride horse. There was no barrel racing last year.

Two of barrel racing's brightest young stars will be leaders in the chase for the title. Rachael Myllymaki, 13, of Arlee, leads with a 13.76 time, with Raylee Walter, 12, of Lethbridge, a close third with a 13.88 clocking. Paul Johnson, a bareback finalist, and other cowboys agreed that when you're looking at the Stampede's Guilty Cat and Lonesome Me, you're looking at the two best bucking horses in the world. Moon Rocket, a former Stampede bucking-horse champion, has been buried at the Stampede Ranch near Hanna. He laid down and died, while grazing, at the age of 27.

A charity auction, in the memory of longtime Stampede rodeo committee member Bill Thompson, will be held tonight at Ranchman's Night Club on MacLeod Trail. Proceeds will be donated to the "Score One For The Holy (Cross Hospital)" fund-raising campaign. Crowds have been steadily building By Doug Abraham Herald writer) There'll be all new blood in the winner's circle at today's Rodeo Royal finals at the Corral. All defending champions have been elimi-rtated. Barebacker Robin Burwash of Oko-toks was the last to fall when, due to a broken foot suffered last weekend at the Medicine Hat Rodeo, he was forced to "turn out" the steed he'd drawn named Tom Sawyer in last night's event.

Saturday's show was the final chance for cowboys to qualify for today's showdowns. No fewer than seven American and one Al-bferta cowboys managed to climb into a Top 10 standing through the first four events on last night's program calf roping, bareback, steer wrestling and saddle bronc. Fred Whitfield's calf-roping time of 7.9 seconds last night is the best of the week. The Cypress, cowboy, who is a real speedball on the ground, currently ranks third in the world standings. In bareback, Shawn Schild of Blackfoot, Idaho, topped last night's scores with a 78 on Prairie Chicken.

Cam Morris of Patricia snuck into today's final with a 75, creating a five-way tie for the lowest qualifying score. Bart Brower of Whitehall, got a horn in his ribs but still won last night's steer wrestling with a 4.9-second run. Steve Blixt, also of Montana, grabbed the last qualifying spot with a 5.5 run. Three U.S. saddle broncers rode into the finals on Saturday.

Merlon Fairbanks of White River, S.D., led last night's performances with a 78, Terry Carlon of Burns, had a 77 and Dusty Crary, of Choteau, marked 76. Fairbanks has joined Gary McDaniel in a second-place tie, just one behind the co-leaders. "She was one player who was hurting Red Deer." said MRC coach Maria Watson. "Her injury and the fact that we were still thinking about the loss to Red Deer got us off to a slow start. You can't do that against a team as good as Vancouver. "If we had regrouped a little earlier, we might have been able to make a run at it." FX Garneaux College earned the women's title, knocking over Red Deer 3-0 (15-8, 15-8, 15-2). Maisonneuve, meanwhile, took the men's crown 3-0 (15-10, 15-8, 15-9) over Sheridan College of Oakville, Ont.

and, then, disappear with two straight losses in yesterday's playoffs. The slide began in the morning semifinal with a loss to Red Deer College, a team the Cougars easily defeated two weeks ago in the ACAC showdown. Yesterday's match went five games and left the Cougars only one hour to digest the upset before playing Vancouver Community College for the bronze. More importantly, the loss to Red Deer left them without star power hitter Trish Gagnon. She injured knee liagments in the fourth game of the match and her absence was a major factor in the Cougars' loss in the bronze By Scott MacArthur (Herald writer) Mount Royal College volleyball teams salvaged only a bronze medal from a disappointing final day- at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association championship- tournament Saturday in Oshawa.

The Cougars beat Selkirk College of Castlegar, B.C. to win the men's bronze, thus salvaging some success from an otherwise mediocre season. Guy Perdue, who is leaving Mount Royal after this season said that, although he expected t) finish in the medals, the win was a good way to wrap up his days on the campus. "We're happy this is a great way to end (the season). To go from third in our (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference) to third in the country in a couple of weeks is pretty good." The win was a tough one for the Cougars, who were relegated to the bronze match after losing 3-0 to powerhouse Maisonneuve College in the semifinal.

Selkirk had beaten Mount Royal handily earlier in the tournament and was considered a heavy favorite. MRC went ahead 2-0, however, and hung on to score a 3-2 upset. After getting a tie on the first hand, Weber won the second, handed the man his two red chips and wished him good luck. Thank goodness pro bowlers don't charge for their autographs like some athletes. There are few pro bowlers who can match Weber for personal charm.

He's a natural. Earl Anthony and Dave Davis are charmers. Both were hounded by autograph-seekers while gambling in the giant Bally casino. Lisa Wagner is learning to be a charmer. It surprised me to see how many men wanted her autograph.

Still, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Weber. By Dick Evans (Knight-Ridder Newspapers) Dick Weber was sitting at the blackjack table-trying to beat the Bally 's casino dealer wBeri a stranger walked up. '''Hey, you're Dick Weber the famous bowl-erjaren't you?" asked the visitor in Reno. Nev. I Weber, who never has met a stranger, sajd: "Yes, sir." And, then, he shook the man's hand while the dealer was turning over ati ace and king.

stranger then asked for Weber's autograph and the Hall of Fame bowler then asked for his name so he could make it a personal message. Then the fan made a strange request: "Will you bet five dollars for me so I can tell He won the first big tournament I ever covered, the National All-Star at the Miami Beach Convention Center in 1962. He was humble then and he's humble now four All-Stars, 26 PBA and six Senior titles later. Sure, it can be a pain in a restaurant to make small talk and sign an autograph when your steak is getting cold. But Weber knows that these are the people who helped him escape mustard sandwiches when he was a struggling young bowler trying to survive in Indianapolis.

It has been 13 years since Weber won the last of his regular Professional Bowlers' Association titles. Yet he's still in demand by proprietors, sponsors, TV moguls and Joe Fan. The sports world would be a better place if there were more great athletes and great human beings such as Weber..
