54 Wednesday, May 21, 1975 The Ottawa Journal 1 BELOW the HILL Dave Brown Fed-up McPartlin heading for Hawaii GREENER (AND WARMER) FIELDS: For several weeks -Jack McPartlin, from his perch behind the organ at the Brans-combe's lounge in Bells Corners, has been predicting he would soon kiss Ottawa goodbye Saturday night he did it A packed room hooted and cheered and wouldn't let the organist- philosopher-niceguy off the stage. At evening's end they gave him a long and hearty standing ovation For almost 20 years McPartlin has been prominent on the local club entertainment scene, and for much of that time he has been the undisputed number-one crowd-pleaser A few weeks ago his chatter turned bitter. That alone wasn't unusual, but this time he seemed to mean it It was impossible -for an entertainer to get ahead in Canada, and in Ottawa particularly, he said. The lure of the south, the United States, was something that couldnt be ignored forever, he told his audiences night after night. He indicated he was ready to leave soon He left over the weekend for Hawaii, where be apparently has a deal cook-' ing that will see him owner-manager-entertainer in a placevof his own.

BROWNED OFF: Looking for fun, frustration and daredevil excitement? Try driving a car out of Lansdowne Park when the lot is crowded While spending 40 minutes getting out of there Monday night after West Ottawa Lions Club's annual fireworks show, some thoughts occurred Since Lansdowne Park Administration never misses a chance to collect a buck for cars parking at any event there shouldn't it provide a little service? They take your dollar and direct you to a spot, but when the show is over you're on your Cars jockey around in all directions as some look for the fastest exit, and others just try to find their way out It isn't only bumper-to-bumper, but door handle to door handle The only, way to move is to play chicken, and hope the next guy cares more about his paint job than you do Ottawa Police are at the front gate directing traffic, and RCMP take care of the exits leading onto the Driveway. But there is no help or direction getting from your parking spot to those gates It's a matter of courtesy for your host to show you the way out, and since Lansdowne Park Administration gets your dollar, that's your host. HEARING PROBLEMS: There's something fascinating about the sound of a human voice amplified in a stadium. After sound system troubles forced him to change microphones at Monday's fireworks show at Lansdowne Park master of ceremonies Ken Grant sounded, from where we sat, like a man sealed in a 45-gallon drum. Couldn't understand a word A very loud woman behind us provided part of our entertainment by keeping her small son, Maurie, posted on what was happening.

"No you can't go to the bathroom. The firecrackers are going to start." There was at least an hour of daylight left and it's doubtful Maurie made it. And this gem: "Sit down. They save the grand finale for last." Ottawa Police Male Chorus dedicated one of their numbers to Ottawa's man at the top, Mayor Lorry Greenberg. It was Fiddler on the Roof It may have been because we were sitting at the east end of the stadium, but the chorus sounded like they were trapped in an oil storage tank.

They are Lt Shann Tymchuk "of 44 Ridgefield and Lt. Marcel D'Eon of 2427 Magnus Ave.

For research that includes predicting the movements of icebergs and oil slicks, Environment Canada scientist Dr. Tadepalli S. Murty has won a major public service incentive award Ottawa Technical High School teacher Philip Bate has won a special award from National Association of Geology Teachers, at a meeting in Waterloo. PARTING SHOT: It's probably just a case of a missing but there's a sign on the bulletin board in the IGA store on Beechwood Avenue: "French curses taught in my home Mann ad uke "I didn't THINK thnt sounded like Phil'H usual morning grunt!" They dressed as mosquitos arrived By BOB BOWMAN Immigration is a controversial problem today but millions of settlers were needed early in the century. Minister of the Interior Sir Clifford Slfton organized an amazing drive that brought two million people to Canada in 15 years.

Most of them went to the Prairies where each family was given 160 acres of farmland for $10. A number of religious groups seeking freedom from European restrictions were among including the Doukhobors. They settled first in the Yorkton area of Saskatchewan and proved to be very good farmers. Unfortu-nately there were sects among them and agitators began stirring up trouble. In-August, 1902, a number of Doukhobors turned their horses, sheep and cattle loose -on the Prairies saying that they were "giving them' to the Lord." (Flashback on Canada) The animas had to be rounded up by government'of- ficials or they would have tro-zen to.

death. a This was the beginning ot years of trouble and violence on the part of some of the Doukhobors, especially those who went to live in British Columbia. They became famous for their protest parades in the nude. They even staged one of them in present-day Thunder Bay when the temperature was below zero 1 That was in January, 1908. The first nude parade took place near Yorkton on May 21, 1903.

Residents were shocked to see 28 male Douk-hobors walking towards the town bare as Adam. They were rounded np by citizens and put In jail, A few days later there was another nude parade Including women north of Yorkton. A Mountie solved that one. Their meeting, place was a house and be opened the doors and windows and nailed them so they would not close. It was dark when the Doukhobors returned and they lit the lamps.

This attracted swarms of mosquitoes and the Doukhobors' got into their clothes as quickly as possible. Perhaps the Doukhobors should have been warned for your end is in sight" OTHER EVENTS MAY 21 1660 Probable date when Dol-( lard des Ormeaux and companions were killed defending Montreal from Iroquois. At die Place de Vlile. Children and their adults were conspicuous by their absence at the film Escape to Witch Mountain during the holiday weekend and that's a shame because its the best children's' movie so far this year. Theatre managers are always complaining a whenever a suitable family film comes along it is abandoned by people. Parents are always lamenting there are few good films to which to take their children. The records sems to favor the managers these days although that's partly because so many of the few children's films are duds." And it was a wonderful weekend.

Even so it's a shame to miss this well-crafted, exciting, clever children's movie. The movie manages to incorporate science fiction with science extrasensory perception with plain old-fashioned common sense perception; humor and suspense; and an intelligent story line AT THE MOVIES Frank Daley An intelligent children's film "1 with careful casting and good production values. The I story deals with two apparent orphans with remarkable extrasensory powers. They are kidnapped by a wealthy man (Ray Milland). and his leading henchman (Dorliftd Pleasance) in order to market them, use them as forecasters for revolutions, the stock market and things of that nature.

They are abetted in their escape by their own. wits add presence of mind (as well as their powers of course) and by a gentle, lonely man (Eddie Albert) in a camper. The ages of the children in- -volved are 10 and 12 but so well handled is the story that I'm certain children far would appreciate certain aspects the special effects; the animals (a horse, a cat and a bear figure pronj-inently in the story); and the -special atmospheric elements of the tale. Because of the lack of business during the weekend the film might end this Thursday. Good attendance might rescue it for another week.

In any case you have until Thursday night to see this film. Given the competition recently (and even on its own merits) Es- cape to Witch Mountain is a -film for families made with taste and intelligence from.a book by Alexander Key. Chess By D. M. LtDAIN, Black 11 Pltcti Whit 9 Pieces P.
