TheOltowa Journal 13 Set three each -V i 1 Becke, Cazu lead record assault Friday, May 16; 1975 By NOREEN SLACK Journal Sports Staff It's evident track and field is improving in the Carleton Board of Education high schools after 45 records were demolished Thursday at the third annual meet at. the Mooney's Bay Sports Peter Becke of Sir Robert I Borden and Elizabeth Caza of Garneau led the assault, es-, tablishlng three records each In junior. Becke erased his own triple jump record of 13.15 metres with a mark of 13.44 metres. The 17-year old pulled his 6'1V4" frame over the high jump bar with 1.86 metres and had a leap of 6.45 metres in the long jump, both for personal bests. His outstanding performances not only earned him the junior individual wwn but helped his school win the boys aggregate title.

Miss Caza's records all came in the sprints. She won Mldt girls fltld Dlicui, Ellen Stmt, Colonel By, 24.48 m. Junior ojrlt track 800 Metre dash, Sue MacDona.d Sir Robert Borden, 2.34.5. 80 Metre Hurdles Julie MenT ard, Gloucester. 12.9.

Beck's been active in track and field since he's been nine yearn old, but claims his athletic achievements come in cycles.

PETER BECKE And yesterday's 'performances likely may be an omen for a new cycle. Becke says between the ages of to 11 he held Ontario records in the 100 yards and the triple jump, but between the ages of 11 to 14 he didn't have any satisfactory results. He blamed it on a height disadvantage. "In grade nine I was only S'l" and I never got past the first High School meet until grade eleven," he said. He held the Ontario High School triple jump record two years ago, but.

since then hasn't made any great strides. "Last year I was havirig problems with my heels because I wasn't training properly," he said. "But I've overcome that now. This year he's training differently. "I've only been running this 'year in draining," he said, "and it's paying off.

Tomlinson (coach) gets on your back and makes you run ell the time to get in Jshape. The running certainly gave me speed and stamina, lapsing beneath 'me. Last year I felt my legs collapsing beneath me. Be ides being in shape, Becke came into the competition with an ulterior motive. "My brother Axel has done 22'9" and held the Canadian indoor and OFSA long jump records, and I was going for 7 21 today, just to get respect 'from him." Three other athletes earned star ranking.

Don Thibodeau of Bell, Ted Belanger of Earl and Richard Pessah all set two records each in track events.
