Dave Brown A young, well-dressed man sat in his office Monday and 'gave me the bad news I don't know how to meditate. Those midnight hours when the house is quiet and all seems well with the world, and I sit in a dark living room with o. only one candle and some low music, don't count. That doesn't. do anything for bronchial asthma or the rehabilitation of pris-, oners.

(Charts 37 and 40 in a Transcendental Meditation book-' let) TVtn tXH1aji ys tins ft mhirno tWm atV tuojVa rf 1Af There was a brief meeting with a strange yount; man on the Sparks Street Mall. He had a shaved head, yellow robe and a red dot in the middle of his forehead. He was trying to ex-plain why I should give him money for a primed pamphlet be had handed me. He talked of meditation and cookies and I didn't get the connection. He didn't get the money.

Jj But Don Finless was a surprise. He looks like a young businessman and when be talks, he makes sense. He says he never gone the long-hair route, and "discovered" Transcendental Meditation while a university student He now teaches for the movement It has a house at 467 Echo and claim about 2,000 followers in Ottawa. It apparently takes a series of seven lessons to: learn how to transcend one's thoughts to the point of meditating at that high level. Aouits 9iu, stuoems $eu ana me ramuy plan runs at $180.

The Maharishl's movement claims 7S.000 followers in Can- rada, and is in the process of trying to set up its own university in tms country. The evening meditation would sort of replace gthat afteAwork martini. One pamphlet Mr.

It contains 64 charts, each purporting to wove great changes after discovering Transcendental Meditation. V. He gave up his job pumping gas at an all-night station, rented three rooms above an' old warehouse on Queen Street, furnished them from a junkyard, and invited me to drop around and meditate.

In the transition front gas pumps to think-tank, he grew beard, had an ear pierced, and took to wearing robes. He also wrote poetry that was so bad It was enjoyable. He served cof- fee that was half a cup of powdered instant, and half hot water. Drinking the thick mixture gave one a jolt that just i about made your heart jump out of your chest A meditation session would begin with about half a dozen persons sitting around, agreeing to all meditate on one word or phrase. They were simple assignments, like "life" or "love." Those were the days when the "in" thing was somewhere between beatnik and hippie.

There were two reasons for mak-' ing several trips to Weird Alfred's. First, he attracted some '-'very attractive gals who wanted to be weird. Second, it was fun to listen to the screams when they discovered rats on the ''stairs. And I confess I never really got into the meditating thing. While everybody else was thinking life, I was thinking every-, body else was a nut.

Another attraction was W. Alfred's readings of his own poetry. I did all my laughing on the inside, and it usually meant biting a hole in my bottom lip. Tbe one I remember -most was his attempt to describe, in unscanning verse, the beauty of a gas pump. j'( Since then my exposure to the art of meditation has been an endless series of faded posters stuck to construction fences.

Most of the other coal was formed in periods from 1.000,000 to 100,000,000 years ago. is found in this earth in flat layers of rock. Coal is the remains of ancient trees and plants that grew in great swampy jungles in warm, moist climates during those periods hundreds of millions" of years ago. Fast-growing end giant ferns grew in these swamps.

In time, they died and fell into the quiet swamp waters. This -protected them against rotting. Bacteria changed some parts of the' wood to gases which escaped, leaving behind a black mix-. ture, mostly; carbon, which was to become a coal seam, i Long years of lush growth caused the layer of decaying vegetation to reach many feet in thickness. Sooner or later, mis process was brought to en end by the sinking of the earth's surface.

This resulted, fa thick layers of mud and sand being washed in on top of the vegetation. In time, the increasing pressure frtlm the overlying mud and sand squeezed out most of the liquid, leaving behind a pasty mass which slowly, hardened into coal. This process was in some S'f? places repeated many times. the layer of sediment built up until it was close to the water another swamp was formed. A layer of vegetable matter was formed in this again, and then if sank again.

In this way, seams of coal were formed, separated from the others by mud and sand which in time turned to ---v FUltfTTME The Riddle Box 1. What letter is never found in the alphabet-? 2.
