The authors of text books of history should be thorough historians, and instead of putting between the lids of a 12 mo volume Jail of the events which have occurred from the time Isabella pledged her jewels, to the date of the inauguration of the last president, should do as Prescott has done with tho history of Mexico and Peru, weave among the bare facts and dry dates, enough of the details to make the book as interesting as the ten cent novel. Discriptions of the customs of the people, their utensils, and their weapons of war, given in connection with any historical fact, will not only make it readable, but will impress the student of history with the dates of the events. In addition to the school text book, books of travels, state histories and biographies, written more for their entertaining style should be placed in the hands of the children at home. Many is the boy who has acquired a thirst for English History from reading Dickana Child's History of England, and if, after this, the parent had placed in his hands, Pres-cott's "Ferdinand and Isabella." he would have, by reading it, acquired a thirst for all history. What we want is more of detail, more elaboration, and the result will be students of history rather that walking cyclopedias of dates.
