Georgia halfback, passed to Maffett, end, for the score. As Tennessee defeated Florida, 13 to 12, in the biggest upset of the year down south, Georgia Tech, alone undefeated and untied of southern conference elevens, automatically won the season's title.

Tech established Itself as probably the sole claimant, to mythical national honors east of the Mississippi by winning. In the third period, Thomason, all-southern halfback a year ago, twisted through for a 42-yard run after an exchange of punts. From the 15-yard line Lumpkin split the line for a touchdown and Thoma son kicked goal to make the score, Tech 14, Georgia 6. Again in the same period the same backfield combination of Thomason, Lumpkin and Mizell drove down the field for a series of first downs and finally a touchdown. Thomason missed goal.

Georgia's Aerial Attick Blasted la the fourth period, Georgia opened a frantic overhead game. One pass put be ball on Tech's 31-yard line, but the Bulldogs lost it on downs. I By BRIAN BELL (Associated Press Sporta Writer) Bobby Jones made hla greatest Bhot in the 1928 Amateur golf cham pionship to win a hole In nar when he was never on the fairway from tee to green. Flaying Phillips Flnlay, the Har vard student in his semi-final round, the champion came to the fifth hole one up.

The fifth hole at Brae Burn Is the longest on the course, 877 yards with a Blight elbow. Bobby Gets Great Recovery Shot Bobby's tee shot was long but not stialght, the champion pushing the ball to bad rough. It was out of the question to use a wooden club so the Atlantan took an Iron and hit a screaming shot from the grass more than 200 yards but again off the fairway, the ball landing In tough grass to the left of the fairway and to make the situation more difficult behind a large tree. The champion was still a full hun dred yards from the green, his ball In grass almost hiding It from view and the tree squarely in front of It In the meantime an excited person had yelled as Flnlay was about to shoot and Phil had wasted a shot In the rough, leaving Bobby in post tion to win the hole and go two up if he could get close enough to the green to score a par five. Bobby studied the lay of the land more carefully than was his wont and even tested the strength of the grass through which his iron must cut to send the ball out Finally he tore Into it with all his power, smashing down on the ball as though he hoped to carry 300 yards instead of one.

He knew what he was doing. He could not play over the tree so he proposed to play through it ed Press from nominations of more than 100 sports writers and coaches are as follows: First team Second Team Van Sickel, Fla Waddey, Ga T. Speer, Ga, T. Lautzen'ser, Ga. Vaughan, Brown, VanTlt Pund, Ga.

Coach Daniels Is not gloomy over the nresent Drospects for casaba material and although he will have but threo veterans, he has a wealth of promising talent The scrimmage with the univer sity of Redlands frosh yesterday has lead the sport fans to believe that Daniels will have a better de fensive team than he had last year. The Redlands mentor will lose only one man by graduation from his team this year and should have one of the leading teams In the South next year. Redlands will play Lancaster at Redlands Dec. 11.

The visitors have a veteran team and should give Redlands plenty to worry about Lancaster high school was winner of their league last year. British Golf Critics Forecast New Links Queen in Miss Wilson Powerful Drives of 18-Year-01d Girl Have Given Hope She May Defeat Glenna Collett (Special to The Sun) Bv FRANCIS J.

POWERS CLEVELAND, Dec. 8. In Miss Enid Wilson, British golf critics see a player nireaay me superior 10 Glenna Collett and potentially the eoual of Joyce Wethered, who will rank as the greatest woman golfer of all time until a better one comes along. The British, whose post war production of real golf stars has been confined to Miss Wethered and Thomas Phillip Perkins, the young amateur, are more than mild ly excited over the play of Miss WU son and are predicting a great fu ture for her. New British Star Watched This new star on the British horl zon is only 18 years of age, and the daughter of a physician, dwelling in the midlands district She is tall of stature and possesses a strong pair of arms and wrists that are a part or the natural equipment of every great golfer.

Miss Wilson has been playing golf for several years, but only recently won the English ladles closed championship at Walton Heath and it was her play in that event that convinced British experts new star had been found. Miss Wilson, according to George Greenwood, one of the most capable of British writers, can drive as far as tho average male golfer and also possesses a faculty that most women lack: ability to play a 170 yard iron shot straight to the pin. Her ability with the Irons is quite extraordinary and is the feature of her game that leads to the belief she will quickly become the leading woman player In the game. It also is declared by those who have seen both players in action that Miss Wilson is a more finished and powerful golfer in every detail that Miss Collett That being true. she must possess rare ability for here In America we have come to think of the Providence girl as one of the two best women players in the world.

Americans Will Have Hard Time With Miss Wilson on deck and a strong possibility that Joyce Wethered may be found in the list when the 1929 British women's championship Is played at St Andrews, the American contingent contemplating an invasion of Britain may find their task a bit more difficult than was believed some weeks ago. i It was thought that Miss Weth ered's game might have fallen off to some degree, through her two years absence from championship fields. But only recently she com' petea in tne mixea foursomes, an event that has become quite important in British golf and with a new partner won it quite handily. For several years, Miss Wethered paired In the mixed foursomes with Cyril Tolley and the pair was almost invincible. But the change In part ners made no difference to Miss Wethered and her game was more brilliant than ever.
