"All the yearlings are well-bred at U.S. sales, so I concentrated on getting good-looking ones," explained Beel- by. Other drivers, who have posted impressive meet percentage figures in Alberta, include Rick Graham, .454 in 1974; Len Meehan, .453 in 1976; Mac Galbraith, .469 in 1977; Keith Linton, .490, John Baxter, .467 and Ed Stewart, .446 in 1978; Daryl Litke, .458 in 1980; Ted Turcotte, .464 in 1981; Rod Hennessy, .462 in 1982; Sten Ericsson, .450 in 1985; Keith Clark, .456 in 1987; and Beelby, again, .443 at the Edmonton 1988 fall session.

SHORT TALES: Keystone Rambo, boasting a 1:55 mark, will be an added starter in Sunday's $25,000 Brad Gunn Pace. He arrived from Clover-dale Raceway earlier this week Steve Gotaas, the injured Minnesota North Star skater who gained his harness-racing trainer's license last summer, has joined the Calgary claiming wars. He haltered Three In The Key and Wiggle Waggle for the Todd Beelby stable and had a win with Tarvan in her only start for him before she was claimed again. Gotaas has resumed skating, following knee surgery, and could be ready for playoff action Edmonton simulcast betting has achieved such success that its daily average is about $325,000, its daily per capita bet is about $220 and the northern track even exceeded live betting at Calgary on one occasion It's back to the drawing board in Halifax, without harness racing since Downs closed in 1986, since Horse Owners of Halifax County withdrew its support for a proposed 58ths-mile track near its international airport. The reason was that horsemen have never been given any encouragement that the project would go forward In thoroughbred racing, millionaire Cryptoclearance has been retired after tearing a ligament in a recent Florida workout.

POST TIME hen the going gets cold, Clark Beel by gets going. The 29-year-old reinsman, who has already clinched his fourth percentage Doug Abraham driving title in the last seven Calgary winter meets, has only one challenge left in the current session which will end Monday. Can he break the record .485 percentage, for an Alberta meet, set by Gerry Ringrose in Edmonton in 1975? "I don't know but I'll be trying," the quiet-spoken Beelby said Wednesday. So what's the secret for racing's Mr. Freezie, who has finished out of the top three percentage pilots only once in the past seven winters? "I'm not really sure 'il what it is, but I race only claimers and that has meant short fields at this meet," savs Beelbv.

BEELBY "Non- claim ing races are a lot tougher." Beelby 's star claimers have been Precious Fella and Sky Catcher. The former boasts a 10-5-3-2 meet record while the latter is 5-2-3-0 this year. Mr. February entered last night's card with a glossy .466 meet percentage. He added a third from three drives.

Beelby and his owners spent $54,500 for six yearlings at last fall's U.S. sales, but he has a logical explanation for such a radical departure from claimers. "I want 15 horses in my stable, but there are only 10 claiming classes between the $4,000 and $20,000 levels. So I've got to have some colts and, besides, I kind of missed them. You never know when you might develop a really good one." (Editor's note: Like Bio Ilene, an $8,000 yearling who won a 1:58 mile for Beelby and A wis.
