CALGARY HERALD February 13. 1990 C11 THE CLASSICS, STAY Actor takes over role INFORMED HOME post-glasnost Soviets, hear it quite differently. Modelled after Prokofiev's Third Sonata, it is an exuberant essay in then-novel textures, processes and effects. The sonata isn't as imposing a work as its successor but is an interesting and until recently rarely heard item from Shostakovich's youth. Zilberstein's virtuosity is seconded by the sheer sense of fun she elicits from the work's DELIVERY most boisterous passages.

The young musician, winner of the Busoni Competition in 1988, is no less adept in the Rachmaninov Preludes. So many of her countrymen sound as if they are embarrassed by Rachmaninov's unashamed sentiment. Zilberstein plainly is not, and brings out the color and character of the 13 preludes with style and sumptuous tone. Rating: A 235-0121 mi tin mm rim (Continued) piano, provides further evidence of his credentials in an individual reading that avoids excess and appears effortless, no small matter in a work only the best can play. Shostakovich: Piano Sonata No.

Rachmaninov: Preludes, Op. 32 Lilya Zilberstein, piano (Deutsche Grammophon). The Shostakovich Sonata was effectively banned in the Soviet Union for most of the composer's lifetime. In the view of the authorities, it was evidence of leftist leanings that were not in the people's best interests. We, and Calgary actor Steven Hair will replace Kiel Martin in the role of Sgt.

Merwin J. Toomey for the remainder of Stage West's Biloxi Blues. Martin returned to L.A. af-' ter experiencing chest pains. Hair, artistic director of the Pleiades Theatre, has appeared '4n productions for Theatre Cal-; gary, Alberta Theatre Projects and Lunchbox Theatre.

His last appearance at Stage vWest was in Doubles, starring opposite Vic Tayback.
