Quarterback Mark Rypien scored two touchdowns, both on short runs for the reigning Super Bowl champions. Monk, 34, caught seven passes for 69 yards to increase his career total to 820 receptions that's one more than Steve Largent had with Seattle between 1976 and '89. On defence, meanwhile, the 'Skins registered five sacks and two interceptions.

(More NFL: C4-5) V. 1 1. 'p 1 Stewart shuts down Jays to send showdown to SkyDome for Game 6 By Allan Ryan (Toronto Star) OAKLAND So, where was Dennis Eckersley when Toronto Blue Jays really needed him? For that matter, where was David Cone? Dave Stewart? The Jays had a real good idea where he was. Oakland Athletics, positively reeling just 24 hours earlier, turned back the Toronto 6-2 Monday afternoon to stave off elimination in an increasingly captivating American League Championship Series. It's 3-2 now for the Jays the ultimate (or maybe penultimate) game set for Wednesday afternoon at SkyDome, Juan Guzman vs.

Mike Moore. BASEBALL Further coverage C2 Stewart, in what may well have been his last appearance for the A's he's one of their 15 potential free agents turned in a trademark performance, stiffing Toronto on seven hits in going the distance. "We were pretty down (after losing Sunday afternoon's Game 4, 7-6)," said Stewart, now 6-0 in eight career ALCS starts for the A's. "I just recognized we had another game to play and the sun was gonna be shining. If it wasn't shining, then I was gonna shine.

I just didn't want to go home after this one." Cone, meanwhile, working on three days of rest, was down 2-0 on a Ruben Sierra home run in the first inning. His own throwing error, attempting to pick off Rickey Henderson at first, cost him a run in the third and, then, Cone got chased with three more in the fifth. But never mind that three days of rest business. The arm felt different, Cone agreed, "but it feels different every time out. That's a starting pitcher's dilemma and I just have to adjust to it.

"Today, I just couldn't establish a fastball and it cost me." Jimmy Key worked three shutout innings in relief of Cone, but the comeback wouldn't come and the champagne remained corked. "Generally speaking, taking two of three (in Oakland) is great," said Cone, "but, naturally, I'm disappointed. I had a chance to be part of history." "Sometimes, there isn't much justice in baseball," said Oakland manager Tony La Russa. 'There wasn't any justice yesterday (when A's blew a 6-1 lead and bowed in II innings) but, today, there was justice. For Stewart to be out there (for) that final out that's how the script's supposed to go." But a 139-pitch, complete game from a guy coming off elbow problems? "He had the eye of the tiger," said La Russa.

"When he does, I don't think there are limitations." Non-stop Browne made it all the way to third on the play, then crossed when Sierra banged a single to centre. Sierra, by the way, now leads the A's with seven RBI in the series Jose Canseco totalled three for eight postseason games in 1990. So, anyway, it was 6-1 and Toronto obviously had the A's right where it wanted 'em. The Jays got closer than it sounded, too, but two defensive nuggets on Robbie Alomar defused the notion of comeback.

The first of these actually came in the fifth the Jays still down only 3-1 and Devon White, 4-for-6 with a couple of walks in the two games against Stewart, on second after a two-out double. Alomar slashed one between third and short but, somehow, sliding on one knee, Mike Bordick made the play. Then, in the seventh, Blankenship speared a low liner by Alomar to short-circuit another inning with promise. (From The Toronto Star) (Distributed By SouthamStar Carney Lansford took a breather, Browne whacked Cone for three straight singles, then added another against Key. The first of these was nicely placed in front of Sierra's HR.

The other two delivered runs in the third and fifth. Toronto's sixth, seventh and eighth errors of the series, which ties a playoff record, also figured into the mix. In the third, Henderson, who had reached four times in Game 4, then three more yesterday, opened with a walk, then motored to third when Cone's pickoff attempt sailed past John Olerud and skittered into the vast foul territory. Up came Browne and it was 3-0. "I thought I could get him," said Cone.

"When Rickey gets on base, you can't afford to not pay attention." A notch closer in the fifth, thanks to Dave Winfield's leadoff homer an inning earlier, Toronto's Kelly Gruber couldn't put the squeeze on a leadoff skimmer by Lance Blankenship, who was at second by the time the third baseman recovered. The Athletics had been saying that a second look at Cone would make a large difference and, while they may well have been right, it didn't explain Jerry Browne, who'd watched Cone's Game 2 performance from the bench. The Flames brought 13 forwards on the trip and were to make a decision shortly before game time on just who would sit. "That will depend on Minnesota's lineup. Dahlquist had a career-high 13 assists last season, but a career low in goals one, although he has never scored more than four in any National Hockey League season. He scored in his first game as a Flame and has since added an assist and is plus one in the plusminus column. "This is just what I thought it would be," Dahlquist said of Calgary. "There's a really good team here.

There are a lot of talented players. If I can put my game into the lineup, then I'm happy." Of his former team, Dahlquist sees a change to an offensive mode from defensive, noting the acquisition of Rus3 Courtnall from Montreal was the first signal. "They added a lot of speed. 'They were around when I was growing up. It was the team I followed, but it was never really a dream to play for the North Stars." After five and a third seasons in the Pittsburgh organization, Dahlquist, along with Jim Johnson, was traded to his home-state team in exchange for Larry Murphy and goalie Peter Taglianetti. "It was an adjustment," the defenceman said Monday. "When I'm away from the game, I like to be away from the game. It was tougher there.

You get old friends calling and things. It's difficult that way, but it's nice to be around your family." Dahlquist isn't exactly returning home Tuesday night but, when Calgary plays Minnesota here tonight, he'll see a lot of familiar faces. After all, it has been just over a week since the Flames claimed the him off the waiver wire. "It's always a little strange the first time (you play your old team). When I was traded by Pittsburgh, it was two games later that we were playing the Penguins.

Here, I've played three games." So, is it good or bad news to play against former teammates? "It helps you and it hurts you. System-wise and talent-wise, it's OK because you know the people but, you can be fearful, too. They asked me that when we were playing Pittsburgh in the Stanley Cup (two years ago). I had to say: don't really know. I haven't played against them anymore than anybody The stay-at-home defenceman has fit nicely into the Flames' plans, doing exactly what has been asked of him.

This year's Autumn Gold turned into a showcase for four rinks recognized as the best in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Shermack-Santos had won the Alberta championship for three consecutive years until she was dethroned by Calgary's Cheryl Bernard. Bernard finished third in this Autumn Gold, defeating Regina's Sandra Peterson, the bonspiel's defending champion. Peterson had represented her province in the '91 Tournament of Hearts, but she was beaten in last season's Saskatchewan final by Schneider.
