Undefeated By Jeff Ranck For The Daily Item HAMILTON, N.Y. -Bucknell won the toss and scored on its first possession of the game, but that was where its bid to hand undefeated Colgate Its first loss of the season ended. The Bisons fell victim to an overpowering offense for the second week in a row coming out on the short end of a 49-17 tally here Saturday afternoon. The Red Raiders, boasting the number one set of offensive statistics in the country, scored almost at will against the smaller and injury-ridden defensive unit of the Bisons.

While Bucknell had a fairly good offensive showing. Coach Bob Curtis pointed out that "we had to work for ours while our defense didn't hold them at all." After Bucknell moved the ball 75 yards on its first possession before stalling on the five-yard line and settling for a field goal, Colgate came right back. "The people in Vancouver would boo a cure for cancer," observed defenseman Jack Mcllhargey. The fans have been spending most of their time booing Canucks losses, since the team dropped its last four home contests and hasn't scored more than three goals at home yet this season. But getting away from home fan pressures did little to help the Canucks' fortunes. They went into Philadelphia Sunday night and lost again as Bob Kelly poked in his own rebound at 7:22 of the third period to give the Flyers a 3-2 triumph. In the jayvee race, the Bisons' Ken Dolen finished first and the Orange and Blue copped team honors with 16 points. The Bucknell harriers are entered in the annual IC4A meet slated Nov. 14 in New York City's Van Cortland Park. At least, observed Mcllhargey, "It's better being out here, "We all love playing on the road.

You can't make a mistake there (in Vancouver). It's impossible to please them (the home fans)." The Flyers pleased their followers, coming up with their fifth home victory in six outings again with help from one of their non-scorers: Kelly, a left wing whose' career-best output was a less-than-great 22 goals last season. Bruce Malverty nullified that score minutes later when he scooted "75 yards to finish the afternoon's scoring. Curtis was pleased with the performance of his team offensively, but again bemoaned the problems of his ailing defense. "I am very encouraged with the steady improvement of our offense," said Curtis. "We were able to move the ball and Lipp had a good day at quarterback." But Curtis went on to say, "Defensively we are weak and a good ofensive team can take advantage of us. The key seems to be that we haven't been able to contain the quarterback." Colgate's tremendous size advantage aided it in piling up 623 yards on offense.

Curtis remarked that he didn't think that "we have a guy on our team whp could stand up to one of their offensive linemen physically." Susquehanna scored a two-point conversion when quick-thiriking place-kicker Pete Burton, also the starting halfback, took a bad snap" from center and ran into the end zone after faking a pass. Colgate built up a 21-3 advantage midway through the second period when Relph connected with Mike Getman for the first of four aerial scoring strikes on the afternoon. Bucknell came back on its next series and went 80 yards in nine plays when Lewisburg's Brian Shaffer grabbed a 15-yard pass-from Glynn Lipp.

The extra point attempt was no good and Bucknell trailed. 21-9. The Bisons' halftime hopes of remaining within striking distance were spoiled with just 16 seconds to play when Colgate tallied once again on the arm of Relph when he connected with split end Dick Slenker capping off a 74-yard drive. Colgate repeated that performance midway through the third period on another Ralph to Slenker. combination making the score 35-9 and then on the next possession, Relph went back to Get flanker Brian DeBiasse on a two-yard TD pass.

Sommerville, called into action when Schlecter was briefly shaken up by a crunching Crusader tackle, passed to Sartori for a 34-yard gain that was the big play of the drive. Turnovers, penalties and punts by both sides plagued third period play. The only scoring came on a safety for the Mules. With the line of scrimmage at the Susquehanna two-yardjine, an official ruled that Crusader quarterback Pete An-narumma stepped past the back line of the end zone while eluding would-be tacklers. Muhlenberg's final TD came when a one-yard sweep by running back -John Sules capped a 68-yard drive in II plays early in the fourth quarter.

On the next series, an apparent Sus- quehanna touchdown, on a long pass from Annarumma to wide receiver Keith Anderson, was called back by an illegal procedure penalty. The Crusaders averted a shutout with less than two minutes left when quarterback Frank Coppola moved the team 50 yards in three plays. A 26-yard pass to split end Dave Santa-croce. plus a 15-yard personal foul penalty against the Mules, put the ball on the 12. From there flanker Vince LaSel-va ran a square-out pattern and Coppola's perfectly thrown ball reached him in the right corner of the end zone.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Mules came up with three second1 period touchdowns which just about settled the issue. Although the Crusader defense stiffened considerably in the second half, the SU offense never posed a threat until the score was 29-0 and the outcome no longer in doubt late in the final stanza. With an equal mix of rushing and passing, Muhlenberg rolled up 272 yards in the decisive first half, while limiting the Crusaders to a total of 14.

While the Mules rampaged for three scores on consecutive drives, Susquehanna failed to penetrate Muhlenberg territory prior to intermission. The Mules first got on the scoreboard after three minutes of the second period when quarterback John Schlecter's one-yard run capped a 75-yard drive. After forcing a Susquehanna punt, Muhlenberg drove 59 yards for its second score. The TD came on a 28-yard pass from Schlecter to wide receiver John Sartori.
