Highest of all in Leavening Power. Latest U. S. Gov't Report. 1 Ni ABSOULrTElX PURE GIRLS OF MUSCLE.

I Flying Trspeie, Horizontal Bar and High Jimp Without Terror for Them. Vivien, it is supposed, was an authority In olden timea on the subject of waving hands and woven paces. But the Berkeley Ladies' Athletic club could fjivo her lessons on the new styles of doing the thing. At their third annual open day the ladies astonished their friends with their exhibition of muscular prowess. Only one man was there, and he had to pay for it by teaching the pupils a new drilL But the gymnasium was crowded with ladies when, at 3 o'clock, a few chords were struck on the piano, the doors were flung open and in filed the feminine athletes.

First came the teachers, Miss Elliott and Miss Potter, the former wearing a bright red gymnasium suit and the latter one of olive, braided with black. Each teacher carried a great bunch of roses. They were followed by the pnpils, who also wore gymnabium suits. These suits consisted of a dark blue blouse, braided, military fashion, with gold braid. Very full Turkish trousers, reaching just below the knee, were of the same material and color as the blouse.

Black hose and low, black rubber Boled shoes completed the costume. These garments permitted perfect freedom of motion, and the girls were so delighted with their emancipation from the ordinary restrictions of manifold skirts and tight waists that they could hardly cross the floor without sundry hops, skips and jumps. If they had been boys they would have turned handsprings all aronnd the room. It was in the apparatus work that the greatest strength and skill were shown. It was quite a lesson in metamorphosis to recognize a swell girl whom you had seen on the avenue an hour before now hanging head downward from the horizontal bar; or to see the daughter of a leading diviiio taking a little excursion up and down the room on the "traveling rings;" or to see another doing the "giant's walk;" or another inoek tongued maiden transformed into the woman with the iron jaw.

Two young ladies whirled around and around the horizontal bar with a rapidity that would make you dizzy, while three others were performing on trapeze rings in a way to substantiate the Darwinian theory. The high jumping was excellent. Half a dozen girls from ten to eighteen or nineteen years old repeatedly cleared the rope when it was four feet from the cushions. One little thing, who always drew applauso by her success, was said by the teacher to hare a really perfect method of running and jumping. She hs a peculiar cross stop in starting.

"I don't wonder tluit hordes get balky sometimes," said one breathless girl as she sat down to rest. "Sometimes when I get right up to the rope it looks so high that I just give right up and flunk." Mme. Beserer, with three of her pupils, gave a brief exhibition of a fencing lesson. A fencing bout between Mme. Beeerer and her wee six-year-old daughter brought down the house.

The little maid, in her long white silk dress, with its green velvet jacket, was a picture to disarm any opponent with a glance, and when she stamped her tiny bronze slippered feet she brought forth a round of applause. Last in order were the fancy steps. Here were woven paces sure enough. The gills formed in two platoons, each of four rows with four in each row, and, thus divided, they did some very remarkable stops. Each successive descent of the hall there was added ar extra hop or kick or pirouette tirrl! there was scarcely a motion left unturned.

The rocking step was the crowning feature. In it the girl.t formed in two long lines, and camo down the hall with a peculiar backward and forward motion which was exactly like that of a progressive rocking hcrse. There were seventy-two pupils from the various classes who took part in the exhibition, and while the youngest were under seven years of age there were not a few who were pray haired and matronly. The figures were well developed, and they were a straight limbed, straight backed lot of girls. New York Sun.
