i I I I Jlllf llllllllll BH3i The spectacle of old sailing craft is not a new one for Holland. In 1975, the year before New York's Bicentennial-inspired Operation Sail, a similar event, Sail Amsterdam 700, took place to celebrate that city's seven centuries of existence. Sail Amsterdam will be expanded this Aug. 6-12 when Sail Amsterdam 1980 will be an international event Some 1,000 old sailing ships tall ships, barks, frigates, schooners and former cargo vessels converted into pleasure craft are expected to come from Holland and countries around the globe. Crews of around 1,000 are expected to participate in the celebration.

The salty festival will start on Aug. 6, following Tall Ships Races, organized by the International Sail Training Association. A triumphant sail-parade through the North Sea Canal will be followed by a ceremonial reception in the port of Amsterdam. The city will again take on some of the spirit of its 17th century past, when the Dutch had the world's largest fleet of sailing vessels. Most of the tall ships will be open to the public.

Special events, including dinghy races, rowing races and sail hoisting drills, will all be free. There will be a mock sea-battle between two fleets when, instead of cannon and musket fire, fireworks will illuminate the entire port. The Amsterdam harbor area will be closed to traffic, and several dockyard warehouses will be converted into a Seaman's Quarter with pubs and cafes and other hideouts contributing to an Old-World atmosphere. This is what Amsterdam harbor looked like during Sail Amsterdam 700 in 1975. An even bigger international event is on tap for this August during Sail Amsterdam 1980.
