Or would he merely become more expert at being selfish, destructive, hateful and unmindful of his neighbors needs? Perhaps even worse, would be become so unutterably bored with the repetition of events that he just wouldn't care what happened, finally resigning himself to an existence more nearly resembling that of a vegetable than a philosopher? I think I would prefer never to find out. All nature, including man, lives, grows, dies, and is born again as the seasons pass and new cycles of life begin. Its not a bad arrangement.

And its been going on for quite a few million years. At least the hew life is eager, vigorous, questing, different, often beautiful and exciting. And at least the old gets buried and is done way with when it is worn out and useless. Preverbs 21:21. AWAY OUT THERE One thing, when Ed gets out there and starts wiggling around it sure makes the spacecraft tough to control. These are the deathless words recorded back on earth when the first American stepped into the chilling voids of space yesterday and maneuvered himself hither and yon for 20 minutes before re-entering his orbiting spacecraft None of the other bits of conversation passing between the two astronauts and their ground control contact were exactly the type to go down in history but the event was historic nonetheless. It was planned, expected, and went off all right But it came much closer on the heels of the Similar Russian exploit than had been thought possible just a few weeks ago. And it is, after all, only the second time in history that man has floated in space, and the first time he has been able to maneuver with his own equipment We may be proud and awed at this feat so amazing that it would have been literally unbelievable two decades ago.

As this is written, the flight continues in apparent good order and will carry on still another two or three days. i Among other things, what a test of human endurance it will be to sit lie, or float as the case mayLbe, in a capsule barely big enough to take a good stretch in for that length of time! Ed will wish he -were out the hatch dangling joyfully In space again many a time before the flight is over. Ill bet on that A QUESTIONABLE GOAL Bernard Shaw once, wrote a play called Back to Methuse-i lah in which he had his char- acters live forever. A science article this week suggests that this might become possible before too long. Aging, it seems, is a kind of disease which might be cured with techniques now beginning to be understood.

Before we embark on such a project, it might be well for the doctors to read Shaws play carefully. He wrote it to show how foolishly we live today, how much time we spend on unim- portant things, how our energies are spent in hate, in passion and in conflict when they would be better employed in contempla- tion. His theme was that if a man could live long enough, he might outgrow his foolish ways. Im a man who has succeeded in the asphalt jungle and you are right.

My wife must be credited with a tremendous contribution to my success because she drove rfa out of the house with her nagging, criticizing, and complaining. The office was infinitely more quiet and peaceful and I enjoyed my work, so I became a 15-hour-a-day man, six or seven days a week. When a man puts in that kind of time, over a period of years, hes GOT to amount to something. I hope you will print this letter so my wife can see it. Yesterday Louis came home from a scout hike and told me he. ate three hamburgers and drank three bottles of pop. He boasted Even the scout master didnt eat that much. Does this sound like a problem? A Mother Dear Yes. it sounds like a boy who cant get attention through acceptable channels.

Some kids would eat a dishrag dipped in vinegar to capture an audience. When you make a point that Louis eats more than his father and older brother it suggests that he is overeating to show off. His braggadocio about out-eating the scoutmaster is additional evidence. Take the boy to a physician and let him decide if Louis should be on a diet. And stop talking about how much he eats.
