The unorthodox doctor from Bethune film project starts to roll Michael, Jake rescue Victoria i fTHE A MONTREAL (CP) Canadian, Chinese and French companies have signed a pact to make a $10-million film about renegade Canadian doctor Norman Bethune, who ended up as a hero of revolutionary China. The result of more than a decade of effort by various filmmakers, the feature film agreement is the first signed by Canadian and Chinese interests, spokesman Nicolas Clermont said Friday. The pact also calls for the making of a four-hour, television mini-series entitled Bethune: The Making of a Hero. China is to provide roughly $3 million for the project, France about $2 million and Canada about $5 million, Clermont said.

Participants are Montreal's Filmline International which produced the critically acclaimed Toby McTeague; China Film Co-Production August First Film Studio of China, and Belstar Productions of France, which made Quest for Fire. "It's just an incredible success, especially after so many previous attempts had failed," said a euphoric Clermont, a Filmline executive. "But I guess we were in the right place at the right time. China is really opening up and what better vehicle for a film project than Bethune." Telefilm Canada, the federal Crown corporation that helps finance movies, and the CBC also are involved in the project, Filmline publicist David Novek said. But no details of the size of their participation were immediately available.
