B14 CALGARY HERALD Sat, October 21, 1989 Bethune movie hex now hits documentary very simple," said Roman Melnyk, CBC-Toronto's deputy director of programming. "Filmline has to deliver the documentary to us to fulfil their contract. If they don't deliver it, they don't get paid," said Melnyk. CBC is paving Filmline a licence fee of $100,000 for the documenta "We wanted the film to help promote the movie to tell the good and the bad, but they took a journalistic approach. All they talk about is how bad the Chinese food was," Clermont said.

When crews arrived in China, they were greeted with less than modern conditions. In addition to airing the documentary until it runs a Bethune mini-series in 1991 that was also shot by Filmline. "So there's still a lot of time. This is not a pressing issue right now," Melnyk said. And what of Bethune, the fe- ture movie? Clermont said it's still in post-production, but it's expected to be released next Feb- ruary or March.

Meanwhile, Strangers in a Strange Land premiered at the Toronto Festival of Festivals in 1988 and has since appeared in film festivals in Vancouver, Berlin, Chicago and Houston. In Chicago, it won as best arthumanities documentary and in Houston, it picked up a gold award for best documentary. "It's just ridiculous. This film has already been shown in film festivals and will be sold to Eu rope and the U.S.

But Canadians can't see it, even though public funds are behind the feature film," said McKeown. Taxpayers, through Telefilm, invested $4.5 million in Bethune. "We didn't mind the film being shown in festivals, but it's not what we want for TV," said Clermont. According to McKeown, CBC is now looking at its contract to see if there's a way of running Strangers without Filmline 's approval. CBC has agreed to telecast the documentary, entitled Strangers in a Strange Land, but Montreal-based Filmline International, Bethune's producers, will not approve it because they feel it's too negative. Strangers in a Strange Land, produced and directed by Bob McKeown, records the difficulties crews encountered during the filming of the $18-million Bethune, the most expensive Canadian movie ever made. The movie, starring Donald Sutherland as Norman Bethune, the Canadian surgeon who became a hero of China's Communist Revolution, began production in 1987. "We are co-owners of the documentary so we have right of approval of the final content," said Filmline producer Nicolas Clermont. As partners, Filmline and the documentary's producers evenly split the film's $200,000 budget, but it is Filmline that has the contract with CBC.

Both men admired Bethune, but they had a difference of opinion in how the great doctor should be portrayed. McKeown, also a journalist with the Fifth Estate, views the documentary as more than a promotional aid. "It's better than that.

Basically, a real story happened a story about stuff going wrong," he said.
