The high-tech product from Monarch Foods was less likely to spoil, because it requires no refrigeration. According to taste tests conducted by Famous Players, the audience can't tell the difference. MAKING CALGARY SPECIAL Calgary is now the second most important centre for film distribution in Canada, with six major distributors (Astral, Paramount, UA-MGM, Universal, Warner Brothers and Cineplex Odeon) maintaining offices here. The world's largest collection of movie posters (worth $10-15 million) is located at the Museum of Movie Art in northeast Calgary, which opened in May 1986 (as part of Consolidated Theatre Services).

Recent purchases of 1,500 rare posters from the 1930s and 1940s have pushed the collection to more than 5,000 posters. The Palace Theatre is now the largest single-screen house in Canada, seating 1,526. The largest multi-screen cinema in Alberta is the South-centre Cinemas with seven From page 11 ship with "head during which the "ramp men" walked behind the cars to ensure that "everybody was sitting up." If not, a flashlight was dutifully shone into the car with the stern directive: "Sit Up!" Remember the complimentary rainshields for the front windshields (and the free heaters) on stormy nights? MAJOR CONCESSIONS In a good summer sellout week in this city, Famous Players will sell 4,500 kilograms of popcorn. Joe Carnie of concession supplier Harlan Fairbanks Co. Ltd.

reports that all popping corn is grown in a strip in the midwest U.S. (Nebraska, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Ohio) and a small section of southwest Ontario, where the combination of moisture conditions and soil guarantees a high moisture content in the corn kernels. Eight kilometres outside the magic strip, the popping corn grown is guaranteed to fizzle. Popping corn grows one metre high. One ear is only 10-12 centimetres long.

What makes corn pop? A kernel of popping corn, consisting of the heart, the protein (or starch) and the flint, pops when intense heat (248-270X) builds up steam inside, which is held and compressed by the hard outer shell, until the outer shell "blows" it into fluffy magnificence. Normal domestic popcorn pops to 20-per-cent volume. But concessionaires prefer popcorn with a 46-per-cent volume (one cubic inch expands 46 times). The lowest acceptable level for the movie munchies is 35 per cent. Good corn has a 14.5-per-cent moisture content.

That heavenly smell in the foyer of the theatre comes not from the corn, but from the coconut oil used in popping. Every Friday afternoon, the staff of Theatre Confec- tions (a local concession company) gathers in the back of the company's warehouse for a tough job: testing the weekly batch of popcorn for taste and volume. (If it doesn't pop up in 40-to- one ratios, it will be sent back to suppliers.) Last year, Famous Players in Calgary was the first indoor theatre in Canada to sell nachos, reports Gary Makar, assistant western division branch manager for theatre confections for Famous Players. Strawberry twizzlers (red licorice) are one of the most popular treats at local cinemas, with Famous Players moving 15 cases per week per theatre. A number of years ago, Famous Players switched from real butter to Golden Topping, a vegetable oil, butter-flavored THE PATIO PLACE PATrAN I ASHOWROOM Our New Fall Selection Has Arrived.
