Lions, Roy Dewalt and Joe Paopao are looking forward to their reunion with Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Bombers signed Dewalt as a free agent and traded for Paopao after 12-year veteran Tom Clements, the MVP in the Canadian Football League last year, retired May 5. "It's kind of ironic that we've kind of ended back on almost a full cycle," Paopao, 32, said Wednesday. "We have a good working relationship.

We're pretty good friends off the field. I just hope it stays that way." Dewalt, 31, who signed with the Bombers after being declared a free agent by the said he was pleased to have the chance to play with Paopao again. "That's a little icing on the deal being teamed with Joe again," Dewalt said. "He helped me out tremendously during those years. I look forward to working with him again because he's a quality guy, a quality athlete.

It should be a lot of fun." The two QBs, preparing for the opening of full training camp today, first became a tandem in 1980 when Dewalt joined the Lions as a rookie. He became the starter by 1982. the CFL put a salary cap of $3 million on team salaries. The B.C. Supreme Court also ruled the Lions owed him $60,000.

The hassle is something Dewalt, a six-foot-two, 210-pound native of Houston, said he has put out of his mind. "I'm raring to go. I'm just looking forward to getting on with playing football and not worrying about things past, but looking for all the things in the future," he said. "Start wasting time on negative stuff looking back and you're wasting good energy." Dewalt, a member of B.C.'s Grey Cup winners in 1983 and 1985, comes to camp as the one to beat for the starting position. Bombers' general manager Cal Murphy said when he obtained Paopao, an 11-year veteran, he was looking at him as a backup.

That leaves three-year pro Tom Muecke, who was used sparingly as a backup to Clements, journeyman Jeff Tedford and rookie Patrick Pope looking for the third pivot spot. And the Bombers haven't given up landing highly touted Florida State rookie Danny McManus, who was advised at the last minute by his agent not to sign a contract after Murphy announced a deal had been struck. Canadian Press BUDDIES: Paopao (left) with Dewalt Paopao left for Saskatchewan as a free agent in 1984 and was traded to Ottawa in April of last year. The six-foot-one, 210-pound native of Hawaii was obtained by the Bombers last month in return for linebacker Dar-rell Patterson. Dewalt, 31, was declared a free agent this year after he balked at taking a pay cut when By Helen Dolik (Herald staff writer) Dwight Beverly is like a boomerang he keeps returning to Calgary Stampeders.

He's been cut twice by the Canadian Football League team, but is a believer of the adage that if at first you don't succeed, try again. have something to prove to Calgary the fans, the players, the coaches," said the six-foot, 204-pound running back, who'll be fighting for a spot on the team as two-a-day practices begin today at McMahon Stadium. "I owe myself a lot. It's respect that I want. I want people to know that I am a capable athlete and can help take this team to a Grey Cup this year.

"I feel if I'm given the opportunity, I can make it work. A lot of adversity has come my way but I have to overlook those things." Beverly's career has seen its ups and downs: 1985 He joins the Stamps for four games after playing with Portland Breakers of the United States League. He rushed for 238 yards on 56 carries and caught 14 passes for 128 yards. 1986 His career had been injury-free, but in the second game- of the season he tore a knee" ligament and underwent surgery. Late in the season, he made it back to the practice roster.

Three weeks later, he was cut. "1987 He was released before; the season even started, after he pulled a hamstring in the warmup of a spring game. "I was mad, I wanted to cry," he recalled. "I was in the best shape of my life at the time." Beverly hooked up with New Orleans Saints during the National League players' strike. He played four games, and tied a BEVERLY: Seeking respect baseball, right?" Beverly said.

"If I get three strikes in football, I'm out of Calgary. I don't say out of football, but out of Calgary. I hope when I go up to bat, I get a home run. And this whole team becomes a winner." "I don't count '87, because I feel when I was up at bat, I got hit with the ball. I got hit with an injury in the preseason so it doesn't really count." Beverly has worked hard in the off-season, running the punishing bleacher stairs at McMahon and pushing tons of weights.

One of 15 children and an outdoors type of person who enjoys horseback riding and golf, Beverly has made Calgary his home for the past 2 V2 years. "Nobody has put a knife to my head to come to Calgary. I just came here because I felt this was the right thing to do for me," said the California native, who turned down a Saints' offer to return to their training camp this season. "Calgary is a nice place to be. I know the people, I know the city, I know the rules of the game.

"It's a great country. I like it, I don't want to leave." Six running backs are in camp including the Stamps' leading rusher, Gary Allen, a good friend of Beverly's. "I see a lot of potential in Dwight Beverly," said MacAr-thur Lane, the Stamps' running back coach. "I've watched film on him. He's the type to impress you on and off the field." -if ffin record for most carries in a game with 35.
