CALGARY HERALD Oct. 14,1986 C5 Drowning claims former Tiger Jockey victorious (CP-AP-Reuter) Former Detroit Tiger Norm Cash drowned in Lake Michigan apparently after slipping off a dock. The body of Cash, 53, of Bloomfield Hills, was discovered about 9 a.m. (MDT) Sunday just offshore from Beaver Island, 52 kilometres northwest of Charlevoix in Lake Michigan. Cash, a Tiger player for 15 years apparently fell off the dock while walking back to his cabin cruiser.

Cash, nicknamed Stormin' Norman, started his major league baseball career in 1958, BRIEFS playing two seasons for Chicago White Sox before being traded to Cleveland and then to Detroit. He won the American League batting title in 1961 with a .361 average and led the league that year with 193 hits. His 41 home runs that season is a record for a left-handed Detroit hitter. IN YACHTING: Canada II posted its fourth win against four losses in the America's Cup challenger elimination series while John Kolius and America II handed Dennis Conner of Stars NORTHLANDS PARK double lengths at the finish line. Malgarini pushed Christopher Leas after pacesetting Margie's Hitter throughout before gaining a 114-length win over this Alberta 1985 horse-of-the-year.

"I figured we had to stay with Margie's Hitter in order to beat him," Malgarini said, "and I was also looking out for the grey (Silver Sizzle) because I'd ridden him before." Silver Sizzle rallied from last to nip Skipping Rock for third money. Christopher Lea, claimed by Roy Haeberle of Halkirk last fall for $9,000 and trained by Bill Matier, is almost certain to gets votes for horse-of-the-year as well as claimer-of-the-year. But voting regulations will prevent him from capturing both titles. Christopher Lea won while enjoying a four-pound weight allowance over Margie's Hitter's 122-pound assignment. Smarter By The Day, from Ontario, scored impressively with hig-hweight of 123 pounds and the outside No.

Three veterinrians worked around the clock with Classy Kind Guy and, aided by what trainer Ron Burrell called "five gallons of water given intravenously," the blockage corrected itself without surgery. iiifjiimiiiiiiiiii: 'H'ir imn I I II ISISI gBiSIBBll'' I III 'In in 'daily' By Doug Abraham (Herald staff writer) That's what jockey Tim Malgarini calls a real daily double. Yousif Stake. Then the 23-year-old rider doubled his stake visits to the Stampede Park winner's circle this weekend with Christopher Lea in the added Thanksgiving Day Handicap. Malgarini had never before won two major stakes within 24 hours. But, after missing virtually the entire 1985 season due to a riding injury to his back, Malgarini has won 93 races since rejoining the Alberta circuit in May. The Thanksgiving Day Handicap proved to be one of the best races of the year when the entire field was only separated by five members Shelley Wetterberg and Patti Yamamoto finished second and third, respectively, in the women's foil.

Calgary Flames defeated Lethbridge Elks 4-2 in an Alberta Major Midget Hockey League game Monday. Cory Taylor, Jason Hicks, Randy Crooks and Ratelle Cross scored for the Flames while Ben Graham and Ron Gregus replied for the Elks. In another game, Medicine Hat tied Calgary Royals 3-3. Stu Thompson, Alan Graves and Tom Grabill scored for the Royals while Jason Prosofsky, Mark Wolfe and Mark Bulding replied for Medicine Hat. i ni I I .1 ii I Ill 11 II! The American battle left the two boats tied for second place, along with England's White Crusader, each with a 6-1 record. Unbeaten New Zealand won its seventh straight, beating Azzurra of. Italy. Canada II defeated the Courageous IV by 3:53 under the direction of Toronto navigator Hans Fogh, who took over the helm from flu-ridden skipper Terry Neilson. IN AUTO RACING: Nigel Mansell had hoped the Mexican Grand Prix would give him cause to celebrate.

All he got was a stomach ache and a postponement of his bid for the Formula One driving championship. Mansell, 32, came to Mexico with a 10-point lead in the driver standings and the knowledge that a victory or also-ran plac-ings by his nearest challengers would give him the title. Instead, Mansell finished fifth and failed to add to his 70-points total while both Alain Prost of France and Nelson Piquet of Brazil inched closer to him in the standings. Prost finished second to Austria's Gerhard Berger in the race and the five points he netted increased his total to 64. AREA SCENE Alberta competitors won five events on the weekend at Western Canadian orienteering championships at Seebee.

Nancy Craig of Calgary and InnisfaiTs Bev MacKenzie won events on the women's side while Stuart Wood of Calgary, Edmonton's Doug Dowell and Sven Jonsson of Innisfail emerged victorious in men's events.
