Leading Laddie upped his bankroll to $103,779 for Calgarians Bill Code and Phil Kueber (Par Four Stable) and Ron and Karen Brimacombe (Westfield Farms) not bad for a colt whom Horizon Farms of High River bought back when he failed to reach his reserve bid at last fall's yearling sales.

He was purchased for $11,000 just before Christmas because Haynes recalls, "there was just something about him he was a sharp-looking colt." Kueber joked that Leading Laddie has added value for Code, a candidate to become an elected senator. "I'm Bill's bagman and this colt helps cut down expenses. He gets Bill's name in the paper without paying advertising costs." Leading Laddie was timed in 1:46.4 as Majestic Horizon ran a distant third in the five-horse field. By Doug Abraham (Herald writer) Anything, they say, can happen in a horse race. So it was that Leading Laddie, considered invincible in Saturday's $75,000 Stampede Futurity by most race fans, had to survive a claim-of-foul to win.

The objection had added meaning because it came from jockey Perry Winters, who rode Auto Mobiler. It represented the final challenge by this stubborn colt from Manitoba who had already turned this annual two-year-old showdown into a two-horse battle. Leading Laddie may have been heavily favored the win price was only $2.70 but the nervousness in his camp was evident throughout the winner's circle as they awaited the stewards' decision. Had Leading Laddie bothered Auto Mobiler in the homestretch? Winning jockey Real Simard, already sweating from unexpected work in the race, wiped his brow with a heavy hand when it was disallowed. Trainer Rod Haynes breathed such a sigh of relief that it may have been heard in his hometown of Taber.

"It just shows there's no such thing as a sure thing," Haynes commented. It became a contentious finish when pacesetting Leading Laddie, unable to shake off Auto Mobiler throughout the race, suddenly tired and began drifting out in the homestretch. It happened just when Auto Mobiler, who had also seemed gassed from this one and l16th mile test, suddenly found a late surge. Auto Mobiler, forced to switch to the inside of Leading Laddie, came up 1 lengths short at the finish line. Winters, looking for his fifth winner of the day, said he claimed foul because his colt had to alter course.

"I didn't want to yank Leading Laddie back down on the rail when he started to drift because he might have lost his stride," explained Simard. The criss-cross situation was evident from the grandstand, but still didn't appear that serious. But it nearly was. "The response to the memorial fund and the number of people it's helping have been really amazing," Archie stated yesterday. "It's also great to have the support of somebody like Tim Conway." Conway witty as ever On a lighter note, here are some Conway racing witticisms from his highly-acclaimed visit to Stampede Park: "Of my eight horses, four are now swimming for exercise. If they ever have a 100-metre backstroke race, my stable's ready." "I've had so many horses vanned off the track that they think that's the way you're supposed to go back to the barns." "My stable once had silks with a 'No Passing' sign on the back.

"Jockeys are the real heroes of racing," says Conway, an owner of eight runners in California. "They put their lives on the line every time they climb aboard a-race horse." MacBeth died two years ago at age 37.

The man who never drank or smoked was taken by lung cancer despite a valiant struggle. His wife and four children live in Long Island, N.Y. MacBeth began as a barn boy in the Dale Saunders stable in Alberta and rode into the Racing Hall of Fame before his tragic ending. MacBeth was the Alberta champion apprentice jockey in 1968. He proceeded to ride horses to earnings of more than $40 million.

He received the George Woolf Memorial Award for his distinguished career and rode two Eclipse Award winners Deputy Minister in 1981 and Chiefs Crown in 1984. He entered the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame last spring. Conway, as guest speaker at Beth Memorial Fund, started by Abraham Conway and jockey Chris McCarron, has already raised half a million dollars for crippled jockeys. There are 35 former riders now receiving assistance and that's what makes Conway feel so proud. The idea began when Conway attempted to return a promotional fee at Canterbury Downs and found no racing charities existed.

Since then, support for the MacBeth Fund has amazed Conway. The Calgary skip won three times Saturday to qualify from the A Event at the $22,000 Autumn Gold Ladies curling classic. Seitz scored four in the ninth end and defeated Sherry Anderson of Prince Albert. 10-5 in the qualifier. The challenge for Seitz now is to win the eight-rink championship round on Monday.

Cathy Rorst shaded provincial champion Deb Shermack 8-7 in an a 11-Edmonton matchup in the second A-Event qualifying game. It was also Rorst's third win of the (lay. The Autumn Gold has been an elusive championship for Calgary rinks. Sandy Turner, in 1984, is the only local skip to win the bonspiel in its first 11 years. "I don't understand what the reason is for that," said Seitz.

"It shouldn't happen." Other members of Seitz' rink include third Judy Erickson nnd lead Betty McCracken, who were with Seitz when they won the Canadian championship in 1981. However, the Dinos bowed 5-4 to Regina Cougars in Can-dian Airlines Cup hockey tournament action Saturday afternoon at the Olympic Oval. Only a pair of last-minute Dinos' goals, from Doug Quinn and Mark Fioretti, made the score close. The win nssured Regina of a berth in the championship final. The tournament, formerly known as the Empress Cup, serves as pre- season wnrmup for Canada West teams. "I don't think we were ready for the game," said winger Tracy Katelnikoff, who scored Calgary's other two goals.

"We might have underestimated them. We just rnme out flat and we didn't do the things that make us good team." The defending tournament champion Dinos. who reached the Canada West final last season, outshot Ri'ginn 2U-5 in the third. However, until the final minute, Cougars' goaltender Rod Houk was brilliant. Dinos' 18-year-old goalie Rob Finley, attempting to make a huge jump from Double-A midget, struggled.

"We're very happy because we've got six veterans out of with injuries and they're serious ones (ranging from one to three months), knees and ankles," said Cougars' coach Bill Liskowich, whose club missed the playoffs last season. Blaine Demtnans paced the Cougars with two goals while Harry Houlden, Lee McMillan, and Denis Carignan supplied the others. Round-robin action con-chides today, starting at noon.
