Swanner of McKinney is well known throughout Collin County for her beaiiiful stitchery and quilting She has displayed and sold her work at Collin County Crafts shows and in Plano Mrs Swanner is a member of the irst Presbyterian Church Heard Museum Volunteers guild and Collin County Craftsmen Her exquisitely done quilts are in such places are Ard more Okla New Mexico and many cities and town in Texas She has an order from Denver Colo as well as from Tennessee and Detroit Mich The display can be seen during the month of March and she will donate a delightful piece to the ward of the hospital McGown was named Lovejoy School spelling champion in the recent spelling com petition Carla Shaw 6th grade daughter of Mr and Mrs Tom Shaw was the runner up Both Sean and Carla represented Lovejoy in the Collin County Spelling Bee Saturday morning in McKinney Alternates were Deedee Gillespie and Jeremy Semrau 6th and 5th grader respectively Carl Marion of Lucas' Hidden Meadows had been confined to Collin Memorial Hospital during the past week with a back problem More winners The Tepera children do seem to have winning ways about them Andy a Lovejoy 7th grader has been a winner in the Lovejoy Gazette school paper contest for the past two months ourth grader Susan Tepera has a brand new 10 speed bike a prize in a contest in a Dallas newspaper Susan named a monster and won her new set of wheels that way Dottie Trahan was 'away from her classroom at Lovejoy for several days last week She has been confined to her home with a recurrence of a back problem Her mother Mrs Willie Dee Smith of Sulphur La arrived riday night to assist in the Trahan home Open house A big crowd converged on Lovejoy school Thursday night when the annual Open House was held The rooms were prepared for the Parents Guests with a very prevalent Bicentennial theme showing throughout Refreshments were provided by the school with 7th grade girls serving as hostesses at the refreshment table With filing deadlines last Tuesday it appears have two good races ahead for city council and for the Lovejoy School Bord Both elections will be held on April 3 ive men filed for City Council for three vacancies These men are Joe Tepera and Dave Rainbolt both in cumbents Milt Gosney Bob Theobald and Merton Bushong Three persons are seeking the one spot at Lovejoy They are Pat Hoelzel Rod Rayburn and Mary Ellen Shaffer According to Lovejoy PTC president Del Hayes thrse three candidates will be presented at the March meeting of the Parent Teachers Club At this meeting scheduled for Monday March 22 Mrs Ancestors come alive for club Texas Heritage was the theme for the Edelweiss program when Mrs LR Huddleston was hostess to the club Members were served a refreshment plate of chicken casserole chips chocolate pie and punch as the social hour began The meeting was opened with Mrs George Kadera using for the invocation is a by Mme Schuman Heinck Mrs Gary Minshew president conducted the business meeting A letter was read from Meals on Wheels thanking the club for their recent contribution It was announced that members would meet March 12 at 3 pm in the home of Mrs Lyman Robinson to put together the bicentennial quilt which has been a two year project The program was "Our Collin County Texas by Mrs Minshew nee Bobbye Jack Chandler and Mrs Naomi Snider Morris This part of the program began with a salute to the Texas flag led by Mrs GR Wheeler Mrs Moms told of her ancestor William Snider born in 1806 son ol Revolutionary soldier John Snider William with his wife and nine children settled in Collin County between 1844 and 18 18 The third child James Madison Snider bom in 1830 was the grandfather of Mrs Morris The most interesting true story she related con cerned the conversion and baptism of this grandfather on eb 14 1864 with the tem perature near zero JB Wilmeth home on furlough from Galveston where he was a Lt Col in the Confederate forces preached at orest Grove in James home there being no Christian Church there at that time James Snider and two others were converted and because of the war James felt he could not wait until better weather to be baptized even though all creeks and streams were frozen over so a huge fire was built on the shores of Snider Lake John McKinney and Gabe itzhugh took axes and broke the ice until they were 50 feet out from the shore and the water was three feet deep The men on the shore sang religious songs while Rev Wilmeth lowered Snider into the sub freezing water They changed clothes by the fire and went back to the house where Mrs Snider had hot tea made from mullen leaves for them to drink There was of course no liquor and because of the war no coffee Mrs Morris is connected by marriage with the Morris Waddill family who played an important part in the educational and judicial history of Collin County Mrs Minshew a high school teacher and a Methodist has among her ancestors Methodist preachers One club member remarked after the baptismal story were a lot of advantages to being a Methodist especially in cold Mrs Minshew in tracing her family for the McKinney ederation of Clubs bicentennial project with the stories published in the Courier Gazette found she was through intertwining of her four ancestral lines related to nearly everyone in Collin County who springs from the pioneers The four lines are Culwell Biggs Chandler and ox families In 1842 her great great grandfather William Culwell born in North Carolina came from Ten nessee to Collin County where he was a farmer a blacksmith and was skilled in remedies for various ailments He was called even though he was not trained as a doctor Her great great grand father Albert Chandler came about the same time Her great grandfather Organ built most of the old iron bridges around McKinney Charles (Sam) ox was Mrs great great great grandfather on her side He settled on Upper Rowlett Creek in 1850 His daughter laiura ox married an Anderson lived near Prosper was a school teacher but later had 11 children and outlived most of them Other third generation Collin County dub members are Mrs Tip McCarley Mrs David Clifton and Mrs
