an album released last summer by the North Texas State University 1 Lab Band has been nominated for a Grammy as one of the best jazz performances by a big band Winners of the 18th annual Grammy Awards sponsored by the National Academy of Recording Ai ts and Sciences (NARAS) will be presented eb 28 at the Hollywood Palladium A check of records by NARAS staffer Carolyn Knutson in Los Angeles showed that the NTSU band is the first collegiate group ever to be nominated for the recording equivalent of the movie Oscar Nominees for the Grammy are selected by the more than 4000 members of NARAS all of whom are associated with the recording industry Allen Piatt executive producer of the Grammy Awards Book said that thousands of nominations are received each year from NARAS members The nominations are screened and then a pre nomination list ls sent to the membership "The procedure is continued until each category (47 in all 1 is narrowed to five six or seven Piatt explained Leon Breeden director of the NTSU lab band program and himself director of the 1 lib Band calls the Grammy nomination "an American dream come "To have professionals look to a university and say 'your work is equal to ours' is a marvelous tribute to these young Breeden said A leader among jazz educators Breeden said he considers the Grammy nomination "a great tribiie to jazz adding that the honor should help jazz education nationwide NTSU has been a leader in jazz education since 1947 when the school became the first university to offer a degree ui the field The NTSU lab band program now in cludes nine cover notes for 75" that "the level of writing and performance is such that thus may well be the best jazz album of 1975 if not it will equal any that is votedthe All selections of: the 1975 album
