(Ch. 12). This Canadian movie isn't 'too nice' CLEARCUT, directed by Richard Bugajski; starring Ron Lea, Graham Greene, Michael Hogan, Rebecca Jenkins and Floyd Crow Westerman. Plaza, mature; through Sunday. RATING: A By Fred Haeseker (Herald writer) Clearcut's dark drama stands out all the more starkly because Canadian films have never been known for their graphic depiction of violence.

Directed by expatriate Polish film-maker Richard Bugajs'ki, who emigrated to Canada in 1985, Clearcut's premise is that violence may lurk beneath the most civilized-looking exteriors. Peter Maguire (Ron Lea) is the very stereotype of a civilized man. A liberal Toronto lawyer, he flies in at the film's beginning to a location in the Northern Ontario woods where police are beating back a group of Indians trying to stop a pulp company from moving in and levelling the forest. In the scuffle, the deeply angered Maguire who represented the band in an unsuccessful suit against the company comes face to face with Arthur (Graham Greene), a fierce, mysterious Indian who seems to be able drags the two men off into the wilderness is the stuff of guilty white men's nightmares. Arthur plays with his captives like a cat with a mouse.

In one harrowing sequence he tortures Rickets by beginning to skin him alive. Adapted by screenwriter Rob Forsyth from M. T. Kelly's novel A Dream Like Mine, Clearcut (like the recent Black Robe) is filmed from a white point of view. Ron Lea's performance has been faulted as weak.

But the logic of Clearcut makes it appropriate that Graham Greene should dominate the film as he does. Only Westerman's wise elder has a presence to measure up to his. Clearcut is not without flaws. The final battle between Maguire and Arthur is not convincing and the film's overall message ends up as strong but ambiguous. With Interrogation Bugajs-ki's long-suppressed last film, however Clearcut shares a rare, impressive intensity.

i to read the lawyer's mind. Maguire, a pacifist, tries to curb Arthur's violent outbursts, but band elder Wilf (Floyd Red Crow Westerman) gives him no help. Instead Wilf invites Maguire to take part in a sweat-lodge ceremony, "to find out what you really want." During the ceremony, Ma-guire's vision of Wisakedjak, the trickster of native tradition, is so terrifying he runs from the lodge in a panic. Afterwards, without warning, Arthur kidnaps Bud Rickets (Michael Hogan), the paper-mill manager, and forces Maguire to come along as his accomplice. SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) Country musician Garth Brooks and and Music Factory had a leading five awards while Canadian Bryan Adams won the world single award at the 1991 Billboard Music Awards. Pop vocalists Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston each garnered four trophies. The ceremony bestowed honors based on record sales and radio airplay from Nov. 1, 1990 to Nov.

1991, said Billboard Magazine spokesman Andi Sporkin. and Music Factory dominated the dance categories with their album, Gonna Make You Sweat. They also won the new pop artist award. Brooks swept the country cate-gories. His album Ropin' the Wind was the first to debut atop the country and pop charts simultaneously.

Carey took home honors for singles artist, pop artist, pop album and adult contemporary artist. Whitney Houston took the Rhythm and Blues categories with selections from her album I'm Your Baby Tonight. R.E.M's Out of Time received the prize for world album. Adams, the Vancouver-based rock star, garnered the world single award for his hit (Everything I Do) I Do It For You which was featured in the movie Robin All instruments, equipment, uniforms, instruction and travel completely provided Music (instrumental) Dance Gymnastic Baton or Flag EXPERIENCE REQUIRED for more information call 250-2263 Telephone Application Deadline: MONDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1991 Financial support provided from the Lottery Fund by the Government of Alberta tfirouah the Alberta Foundation for the Performina Arts and ADAMS: Robin Hood song Hood: Prince of Thieves. and British pop charts since its release in the summer. Ironically, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission declared earlier this year that all 15 songs on Adams's new album, Waking Up The Neighbors, were un-Cana-dian. The CRTC made the ruling because Adams co-wrote the tunes with his British producer Robert (Mutt) Lange. The declaration limited the number of times the songs could be played on FM radio but didn't affect AM radio airplay. J3 i ii I' iT intWJ il All I.
