Few stop to visit. A pity the summit is rich in history, and it holds a mystery. At 2,232 feet, San Marcos Pass is one of only two practical auto routes through the Santa Ynez Mountains. (Gaviotais the other; Refugio is virtually impassable Col. John Fremont led his battalion over the pass in his 1846 takeover of California.

From 1861 to 1901, this was a stagecoach route Running from Los Olivos to Santa Barbara, coaches made a lunch stop at the Summit House Station where Nora Kinevan served up homemade apple pies. Her husband, Patrick, changed the horses and collected tolls. The Summit House burned down in 1970 but is commemorated in a sign on Kinevan Road, a few yards west of Highway 154 near the summit.
