Nittany Lions drop fourth in a row By Tom Housenick The Daily Item HAMILTON, N.Y. MLke Leatherman, BuckneH's most reliable tackier, blew a coverage and missed a tackle on one pass play.

Colgate wide receiver Luke a a nv took full advantage, catching quarterback Chris Brown's pass, slipping Leatherman's grasp and going for a 44-yard touchdown early in the second quarter of Saturday's Patriot League game at Andy Kerr Stadium. It got that bad. Fast. After three years of breaking the Bison's hearts in the games' closing moments, the Raiders' first-team offense broke down the Bison defense early and often by getting touchdowns on all seven possessions. Colgate even scored when it didn't have the ball, building a 43-point bulge en route to a 50-6 embarrassment.

The point total was the most Bucknell allowed since a 56-14 loss to Lafayette in 1994. "They were just better than us in every aspect," Bucknell coach Tim Landis said. "They have a great shot to go 12-0." What was supposed to be a battle for first place turned into a struggle for playing time for bench players on both sides. In the first half, Brown completed 11 of 13 passes for 151 yards and three scores and Jamaal Branch, Division I-AA's leading rusher, had 127 yards on 25 carries as Colgate (8-0 overall, 3-0 PL) had a 347-36 edge in total yards. Branch's two touchdowns gave him 18 for the season, equaling BuckneH's total at that point in the season.

His 2-yard scoring run capped off a 14-play, 80-yard drive to start the game. Colgate showed a little bit of everything on its first drive: shotgun, five wide receivers, power option. All of it worked. "That was key. It really put us back on our heels," Landis said.

Bucknell (4-4, 2-1) did get a Erst down on its first series, but lost the first of two first-half fumbles. Colgate took advantage, going up 13-0 on Ben Evans' first career rushing TD from 4 yards out. "To go up 13 points against the wind against an option team was big," Colgate coach it t. 1 LIONS, from Page D1 two first-quarter interceptions to Yisrael, Chandler settled down. He fired two TD passes in the second quarter and scored in the third quarter on a one-yard dive, giving Iowa a 26-7 lead.

Chandler was 13-of-26 for 174 yards against a Nittany Lions defense that came into the game allowing an average of 121 passing yards per game, the stingiest in the Big fen. Russell, the Big Ten's second leading rusher, ran for 148 yards on 36 carries. "It's always a good win to beat a coach like Joe Paterno," said Russell. "The offensive line gave me some good holes today." The Nittany Lions played without leading receiver Tony Johnson, who was suspended by Paterno after being charged with drunken driving last week. The Nittany Lions scored first on Yisrael's interception return, but it was the On its next possession, Iowa marched 53 yards in eight plays, featuring two big third-down plays by Chandler.

Early in the drive, Chandler was flushed out of the pocket and ran 20 yards for a first down. Three plays later, on third down, Chandler threw a 15-yard pass to Calvin Davis, setting up his 4-yard TD pass to Ramon Ochoa. Iowa extended its lead midway through the third quarter when Chad Greenway broke through the heart of the Penn State punt protection to block Jeremy Kapinos' Jermire Roberts picked up the loose ball and ran 32 yards for the touchdown, putting Iowa up 19-7. Penn State added a touchdown in the third quarter when Zack Mills threw a 24-yard TD pass to freshman running back Austin Scott. Mills, who took over in the second quarter from Michael Robinson, was 14-for-25 for 138 yards.

The. front four Were outmuscled, rarely getting a grasp on any Colgate ballcarrier; the linebackers were often out of position and the secondary was burned repeatedly by the Raiders' talented receivers. "We have some weapons," Biddle said.

"Getting (Branch) back was key and (Brown) is greatly underrated. He's doing a great job getting the ball to everyone." Branch, who sat out last year, finished the game with 175 yards rushing. Brown ran for 57, threw for 164 more and accounted for four TDs. BuckneH's special teams failed, too. Punter Ryan Berry booted the ball right into Antwone Porter's hands.

Porter, who pushed Bucknell blocker Jared Marsilio almost right into Berry's foot, couldn't recover the ball before it bounced out of the end zone for a safety and a 22-0 Colgate leadat the 12:40 mark of the second quarter. Brown hit John Frieser with an 8-yard touchdown pass with no Bucknell defender within five yards, and Evans scored again with 39 seconds left before halftime to complete the first-half scoring. "A lot of teams have been stacking the line to take away (Branch)," Brown said. "That forces you to pass the ball or find other ways to run. We did that." It got so bad that starting center Stephen Watts was yanked in the second quarter after a third botched snap to quarterback John Henry Jackson.

"I don't know whether it's the quarterback's fault or the center's," Landis said. "But, it's something we have to work out." Bucknell avoided the shutout when Blamah Sarnor scored from a yard out against Colgate's second team defense, capping a 14-play, 80-yard drive. In the third period, Bloomsburg quarterback Jack Lydic of Selinsgrove connected with Nick Kurtz on a 55-yard touchdown pass to make it 31-0.

Later in the period, Heck scored on a 25-yard run to put the Huskies up 38-0 heading into the fpurth period. Cheyney got on the board twice before the end of the third period when Errieck Stewart hit Ed Gedding with a four-yard scoring pass to make it 38-7. The combination of Stewart to Gedding connected again, this time from six yards out, on the final play of the third period to make it 38-14. Bloomsburg scored its final TD with 8:24 to play when Southern Columbia High graduate Shaun Gaul ran in from 11 yards out. Along with Heck's 153-yards on the ground.

Mike Ceroli gained 137 yards and moved into ninth on the all-time school's rushing list with 1.537 yards. Gabe Robinson led the BltHimsburg defense with six tackles, while Tyler Trettin added five'to go along with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Bloomsburg gained 447 vards of total offence- team's only points in the first half. The Hawkeyes defense gave the offense plenty of time and opportunities to get on track, holding Penn Slate without a first down until midway through the second quarter and just 42 total yards in the first, half Paterno was at a loss to explain his team's inability to capitalize on Iowa's turnovers or its 2-for-15 performance on third-down conversions. "I don't think you can win against good teams if you waste opportunities," Paterno said.

"Our defense has been pretty good all year. They hung in there and kept us in the game in the first half." Early in the second quarter, Hodge's fumble return set up Iowa's first touchdown, a 2-yard pass from Chandler to Matt Melloy. Nate Kaeding's extra point attempt was blocked by Scott Paxson, but it didn't take Iowa long to grab the lead. to quell the Crusaders momentum. First Chris Pride, whose extra point tries are usually as automatic as a' 3-0 fastball, missed wide right.

Then freshman Craig Haywood returned the kickoff 33 yards to the King's 42-yard fine. Six plays later, Jackson burst through a huge hole over the left side for a 10-yard touchdown to put King's back up 21-13 with 11:03 left in the third. Bartosic, Crusaders fizzle against Monarchs By The Daily Item CHEYNEY Freshman Josh Heck rushed for a career-high 153 yards and two scores as Bloomsburg University rolled to a 45-14 win over Cheyney University Saturday afternoon. The win was the fifth in a row for the Huskies, now 6-2, 4-0 in the PSAC Eastern Division. Heck's previous best rushing day was a 127-yard effort against Millersville two weeks ago. Blooms- 1 burg lump- cd out to a 14-0 lead in first per- SU iod' when Mike Ceroli and Josh Heck scored on short runs. The Huskies made it 24-0 at the break on Tim Oliver's 28- CRUSADERS, from Page D1 He added. "We were persistent enough to stay with it, because they had us stoned in the first half. They were banging us good." The Crusaders (3-4 overall, 3-3 MAC) trailed 14-7 at half-time against the defending MAC champs and scored on their first possession of the second half. Halfback Chris Ross keyed a six-play. 80-yard drive with a 50-yard run and fullback Jason Eck scored his second TD of the day on a one-yard dive.
