Last week Scott, Paul Newman's only son, died from what was called an accidental overdose of a tranquilizer and alcohol. He was 28. When we met four years ago, Scott Said that most of his life was spent running from movie cameras because of his father, but now he had stopped running. A name can be a burden.

Scott had landed a guest shot on "Marcus Welby," a part in "The Great Waldo Pepper," which starred Robert Bedford, and another part in "The Towering Inferno," which overflowed with stars: Steve McQueen, Faye Dun-away, William Holden, Richard Chamberlain and Paul Newman. Before he turned actor, Scott's last" job was a $3-an-hour construction labor er. "It's a brand new world," Scott exulted. "I love It and I'm good at it, I think. I know what I want to do now.

And it's giving me the chance to dispel a few myths about my relationship with my lather." The myths existed mostly in his own mind: He was wealthy because his father is. He was a spoiled brat. Scott was an actor with Daddy's help. "The life I've led and the jobs I've had belie all that," he said. "As a kid I felt I was entitled to everything my father gave me.

I outgrew that. For the past four years I've made and paid my own way, except for the help he gave me when I got into a scrape." He got noisy one night, after a little drinking, and resisted three policemen who were trying to take him in. The charge was assault with a weapon. "The weapon was my boot," Scott said. He was fined $1,000, drew two years probation, which was reduced to one.

Scott was a muscular 180 pounds, 6 feet tall, with black hair, green eyes, a striking resemblance to his father, and a smile that never went beyond wistful. His father sent him to private schools and to college, where Scott majored in history; outside college he majored in sports and skydiving. Good at it, too: 500 jumps, qualified as an instructor, and even taught skydiving to a class at the U.S. Naval Academy. He dropped out of college after two years, went west, drove a shuttle truck carting skiers to a ski resort at $2.40 an hour.

When he cut down trees to clear a new ski run he got a raise to $2.55 an hour. "But I ate," said Scott, "and as often as I could afford it, I was phoning George Roy Hill. He was going to direct 'Waldo a picture about barnstorming pilots. But Hill offered me a part I had a few fears about that, but I grabbed it" He was so fearful that he began acting lessons four times a week.

For "Towering Inferno," stunt men spent a week teaching him how to climb down the side of a building using a rope. In the picture Scott and Steve McQueen had to use a rope to climb 10 stories down an elevator shaft. McQueen didn't know that Scott was to be in the movie. When he found out he was sure Scott could not do the stunt. "He got real rough about it," Scott said.

"But after the first take he yelled, "Hey, that's good. After two hours of takes he was strong in his praise. So they added a few cameos and gave me a nice scene." But when he sang in night clubs he used the name William Scott Now, there will be no more scenes or singing. A family friend said that after cremation, whatever service held for Scott would be very private, only for family: his mother, Jackie Witte Paul Newman's first wife, and Scott's sisters, Susan, 25, and Stephanie, 24, his father and stepmother, Joanne Woodward, and their three daughters, Elinor, 19, Melissa, 16, Clea, 13. Scott always called all five girls "my sisters." He was seven when his parents were divorced, old enough to know what that meant At 19, on his own by choice, he quickly learned what a burden his name could be.
