Your Headquarters For Christmas Shopping SANTA Gifts that spell charm are sure fire at Christmas because you can find something in any price bracket and for every- type and age. They are good to remember as last-minute shopping ideas because they are available at drugstore counters, department stores, variety stores. Small gifts, ideal stocking- stuffers, are good for babysitters. salesgirls at neighborhood stores and as extra gifts for the family.

These include soap, cologne, nail polish and little kits containing eye makeup, all the rage with the younger and older generation. If the budget limited there are more important gifts to be found at cosmetics counters. There are all sorts of wonderful perfumes and colognes in some bottles, attractively wrapped to please the woman who loves scents. Two things are important in choosing expensive perfumes. The perfume should be selected because the person likes it or on the basis that it can be returned.

There is nothing more depressing for a woman than the gift of a perfume she can tolerate, especially when it is a big. fancy, expensive bottle, and cannot be returned or ex changed. A great many gifts fall into the category of a pleasant surprise. A course of beauty salon treatments, reducing treatments. permanent wave or a gift certificate for a special makeup or hairdo may be just the gift to perk up a busy mother.

It is inconceivable that a woman be pleased with a complete ensemble of her favorite cosmetics unless she has said that she has her heart set on something else. Christmas Supplement MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1959 BOSS OF THE KITCHEN WILL LIKE COOKBOOK when youngsters had to use their imagination to visualize Santa Claus and his North Pole establishment? There has been a lot of progress since then. First, Santa Claus and his helpers moved in on every city of the land. He began appearing not only at private homes and at church festivals but in stores and on street corners. More recently, he has transplanted his North Pole village, or hamlets that look as his village might look, to various convenient sites around the country. Youngsters and adults by the thousand have been visiting them.

Here is a picture taken at Village in the San Bernardino mountains 80 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. In Winter it has honest to goodness snow, but snow or no snow it stays open 364 days a year. The closing day is Christmas itself. This Santa's Village was the brainchild of a young businessman named Glenn Holland who raised half a million dollars to build the storybook houses and equip them preper- ly with elves, animals, toys, candy, and such rides as a 20- passenger sleigh. When Santa considers the cook this Christmas he has a wide choice of unusual cookbooks to1 choose from.

A series of letters to young housewives precede the recipes in My Darling Daugh-, by Mildred O. Knopf (Knopf) because this book was inspired by the married daughter. Any cook who was de- I lighted by Mrs. previous Perfect will be even happier with this latest compilation of recipes for all the courses of a meal. These rules are ones that were enjoyed by a family of discriminating taste and are written with clarity so that other families may benefit.

Travelers who want to duplicate certain dishes tasted in American restaurants should be happy with Club by Myra a 1 (Farrar, Straus and Cudahy). After gathering the recipes from I wide sources, the author put 'them in good form so they could be duplicated successfully. Her should be of particular help in planning meals for to be entertained at home. Hill by Elsie Masterton (Crowell) is an inviting homespun collection of recipes. The author is the same Elsie who some years ago went with her band John to Vermont to a ski area, then found snow could not be relied upon to appear.

So Elsie learned to cook and opened a Summer inn and dinner place. Those who came to eat asked for recipes; now Elsie gives them. Hers is a friendly book, with the sort of comments one interested cook likes to hear from another and with hints on serving. Teen-age cooks might like to have by Robert E. Koran (Vantage).

a small book of recipes for cakes. pies and desserts, cookies and sweetbreads all of them created and tested by the 18- year-old author who several years ago was a junior prizewinner in a country-wide cooking contest.
