The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Wednesday when the Huskies lost 2-1 to Adelphi University in a NCAA Division II Championship opening-round game. Bloomsburg ends its season with a record of 13-6-3. Adelphi advances to face Lock Haven University this weekend in a second-round game. Adelphi scored just 44 seconds into the game on a goal from Luciana Pace from six yards out to take a 1-0 lead.

The Panthers got second goal with just 54 seconds left before half time when Shannon McEntee came down the side and shot from the wing past Bloomsburg goalie Heather Hartman. Bloomsburg cut the lead in half at the 73-minute mark when senior Renee Williams scored off an assist from Becky Ritter. The Huskies dominated play in the second half, getting off 14 shots to just four for the Panthers. Pavel, Brendl gave Philadelphia a 1-0 lead 2:29 into the second period with his second goal. He skated around from behind the net, drew Hurme out of position and backhanded a shot from in front of the crease into an empty net. Huselius tied it at 1 on his eighth goal with 1:10 left in the second period. Sandis Ozolinsh took a slap shot from just inside the blue line and the puck bounced off Huselius past goal-tender Robert Esche. The Panthers had a power-play late in regulation, but didn get a shot.

The Flyers had the best chance to score during the penalty when Marty Murray picked up a loose puck near the blue line, and broke in alone. But Hurme made a stick save to preserve the tie. Esche stopped 28 shots, including a chest save on a slap shot by Ozolinsh in overtime. Hurme's best stop was a pad save on a backhander by Todd Fedoruk late in the first. The crowd of 18,834 at the First Union Center was the smallest since 1996.

The Flyers, who sold out 27 games last year, have just one sellout in eight home games. The Flyers are unbeaten in their. last five games (4-0-1) against the Panthers. Florida's last win was 2- 1 on April 3, 2001 in Philadelphia. Taylor completes a solid career with his second selection to the all-i conference team. A first-team pick as a sophomore, the midfielder started all 17 games and finished third on the team in scoring with three goals and three assists. With his assist in Bucknell's 2-0 victory over Navy, the three-year starter moved into Bucknell's top-10 career assists list with 12. He leaves the school with a total of 32 points on 10 goals and 12 assists. Lookingland has started at defense in every game of his career (37 games).

He is the leader on the defensive unit that broke the school I record for shutouts in a season with 10 and was second on the team in assists with four. and overtime loss. St. Louis at Edmonton, 9 p.m. NBA EASTERN CONFERENCE Atlantic Division Mavericks still league's lone unbeaten Nittany Lions to host pair of NCAA games STATE COLLEGE Penn State is hosting the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament at Bigler Field on Saturday Sunday. The Nittany Lions (16-4) take on Kent State (16-6) and Michigan (18-3) faces Princeton (11-6) in Saturday's first-round i games, beginning at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The first-round winners advance to Sunday's second-round game at 2 p.m. The winner of Sunday's game moves to the NCAA Championship at the University of Louisville on Nov. 22-24. The Nittany Lions are 8-0 all-time at home in the NCAA Tournament and have outscored their opponents 29-3 in those games. Penn State last hosted an NCAA Tournament game in 1995 i when it defeated Stanford 5-0.

The Nittany Lions are 13-23 all-time in NCAA Tournament play and have qualified for the event 20 of the last 21 seasons. Penn State's best showing came in 1993 when the Nittany Lions placed third. circled behind the net and almost back to the blue line before flipping a pass in front. Lakers 2 6 .250, 4 Tuesday's games By The Associated Press CLEVELAND The Dallas Mavericks are still perfect. Dirk Nowitzki scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as Dallas remained the NBA's only unbeaten team, improving to 8-0 with a 103-99 victory Wednesday night over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Michael Finley scored a season-. high 26 points and Walt Williams and Steve Nash had 14 apiece for the Mavericks, who overcame a career-high 34 points by Zydrunas Ilgauskas and a dunk by Ca.vs guard Ricky Davis on which he jumped over Nash. Dallas rallied from a 13-point deficit in the third quarter to extend the best start in franchise history.

Jumaine Jones had 23 points for the Cavs, who dropped their fifth straight since their home opener when they stunned the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers. Nowitzki made two free throws with 4:14 left to put Dallas ahead 89-87. Davis, who was kept out of the starting lineup while being disciplined by coach John Lucas, then hit a runner in the lane to tie it, and made a steal on Dallas' next possession. As he approached the basket, the 6-foot-7 Davis took off in the middle of the lane and soared over the 6-foot-3 Nash's head before slamming the ball in to give the Cavs a 91-89 lead. After a basket by Williams, Nash hit a runner in the lane to put the Mavericks up 93-91 with 2:31 to play.

Cleveland point guard Milt Palcio was then whis- tied for traveling the first' of two violations for him in the final 1:39 and Nowitzki hit two free throws for a 95-92 lead. Finley then scored on a slicing move through the lane, and his two free throws made it 101-96 with nine seconds to go. Martin enters Sunday's season-ending race in Homestead, trailing Tony -2tewart by 89 points in the race for the Winston Cup championship. Stewart can clinch the title by finishing 25th, no matter what Martin vkloes. The appeal will be heard Saturday at Miami-Homestead Speedway. A decision is expected before Sunday's race. Roush Racing president Geoff Smith said Wednesday he appealed because the spring had an "inconsequential deviation" that had absolutely no effect on the fairness of After the race, the spring was found to have one less coil than 1 -allowed.

The Roush team said it came out of the box from the manufacturer and was put on the car in good faith. Besides docking Martin 25 championship points, NASCAR penalized Roush 25 owners points and fined crew chief Ben Leslie $5,000. Smith said the Roush team did a complete inventory of its springs and found one, still in its box, identical to the one used on the car at North Carolina Speedway. He added there were several others I found to be "marginal." He said there will be no lawsuit against the spring manufacturer. Nemechek to stay in Hendrick Chevrolet CHARLOTTE, N.C.

Joe Nemechek will return next season to Hendrick Motorsports, again driving the No. 25 Chevrolet. Z' Nemechek replaced Jerry Nadeau on May 15 and struggled on the track until Peter Sospenzo took over as crew chief on Sept. 10. Since Clhen, former Busch Series champion Nemechek has two top-five fin- ishes and started in the top-15 four times.

Ed Guzzo, who won three Winston Cup championships as Jeff Gordon's car chief on the No. 24, also moved to the No. 25 when y-Sospenzo arrived. He will remain in that role in 2003. Nemechek has two career victories, one in 1999 with Felix Sabates 1-and the other in 2001 with Andy Petree.
