"ABRAHAM and STRAUSI BUDGET STORES! New ark's changing scene BPOOKS.VM QuFrwS CENE -EVS-fAD MlIV A w. Dining at Delmonico's. a gourmet's delight, brought the rich and the famous to this charming building for half a century. It stood on a triangle of land facing William St. and bounded by streets laid out in the days of New Amsterdam; Beaver St.

on the right and. on the left, curving Mill St. that led to a Dutch grist mill. (Now it is called South William St.) John and Paul Delmonico's original restaurant went up in flames in the Great Fire of 1835 which leveled much of lower Manhattan. Soon they began construction of this unusual building with its grand dining room, colorful barroom and many private dining rooms and opened it in 1837, having secured permission of the Common Council to extend ornate iron balconies over the sidewalk at both second and third floors.

The cuisine was French, the service elegant and the cost high. New Yorkers flocked to Delmonico's and the name became known around the world. This building was outgrown by the 1880s and our old photograph may have been taken as a record shot just before old Delmonico's was closed to be demolished in 1890. James B. Lord was architect of the palatial new eight-story Delmonico's seen in our current picture.

The name is still there in gold letters above its curved and columned portico, but today it is empty and dark although two gas lamps at its entrance still burn with a ghostly flicker. At the right margin of each picture is a building put up for the Corn Exhange Bank, the later one at the same time as the new Delmonico's.
