Following the close of the Civil war Mr. Brooks came to Kansas and a few years later married Miss Sarah Catherine White, a sister to L. J.

and W. E. White, of Jamestown. Miss White had been stolen by the Indians in a raid in which her father was killed. After being held captive from August, 1868 until April 1869, she was finally recaptured by General Custer, and was brought home.

To Mr. and Mrs. Brooks seven children were born, one child dying in infancy, and a daughter, Mrs. T. P.

McCall, of Jamestown, died in June, 1917. The surviving children are Walter Brooks, of Jamestown; Mrs. Chas. Jackson, of Baldwin, Kansas; Mrs. Grant Brassfield, of St.

Joseph, Mrs. Frank Medcalf, of Simpson; and Mrs. Carl Flitch, of Concordia. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from the schoolhouse on the Stockton farm in Summit township. E.

0. Brooks Dead E. O. Brooks, one of the real pioneer settlers of Cloud county and a veteran of the Civil war passed away at his home in Jamestown Monday afternoon from hardening of the arteries and heart trouble. For the past three weeks Mr.

Brooks had been bedfast the greater part of the time and on account of his advanced age little hope was held out for his recovery. Had he lived until June of this year he would have been seventy-five yeas of age. Mr. Brooks was born in Whiteside county, Illinois, in June, 1843. He enlisted in A 34th Illinois Infantry on August 25, 1861 and was mustered out July 12, 1865 after three years of service.

He was in more than fifty engagements and was with Sherman on his famous March to the Sea. He was badly wounded at the battle of Kenesaw Mountain in 1864, in the arm but finally recovered the use of that Commssioners Preceding (Warrants Allowed) A. M. Covey dragging auto fund 7.00 R. O.
