Sunday Herald Classified Ad CALGARY. AUGUST 24. 1 986 C6 Cocaine, hashish found in raid on controllers 020 PALMDALE, Calif. (AP) Sheriffs deputies recovered cocaine, hashish and documents in the raid that led to a U.S. federal investigation of alleged drug use by air-traffic controllers, an officer said Saturday.

Thirty-four controllers at the Palmdale flight control centre, which handles thousands of flights daily, have been reassigned to desk duty as a result of the probe, the Federal Aviation Administration said Friday. None of the controllers at the Los Angeles Air Route Traffic Centre has been arrested, and no criminal charges have been filed against them, Don Early, the centre's manager, told a news conference. However, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said Saturday a secretary at the the papers are," Basey said. The Mclntoshes were booked for investigation of possession of hashish and cocaine, deputy Lynda Edmonds said. She said they are free on bond, but did not know the amount.

Early said the reassigned controllers are being required to take urinalysis tests to determine if they used drugs. If the tests are positive, the controllers face penalties ranging from placement in rehabilitation programs to dismissal, he said. The controllers are among 238 at the centre in Palmdale, about 70 kilometres north of Los Angeles. The centre is responsible for directing commercial, military and general-aviation flights over southern California, Arizona and portions of Nevada, Utah and the Pacific Ocean. Palmdale centre was arrested in the July 8 raid on her home.

The officers raided a party attended by controllers, said John Thornton, organizer for the National Air-Traffic Controllers Association, a union trying to organize U.S. controllers. Sheriffs deputies and an FAA investigator served a search warrant at the home of Karen Mcintosh and her husband, Steven, said deputy sheriff Drew Basey. "During the search, hashish and cocaine were seized, and both the Mclntoshes were arrested," Basey said, reading from a news release. "Miscellaneous papers were recovered that led the FAA to launch its own investigation into its personnel employed at the Palmdale flight-control facility.
