E4 CALGARY HERALD Sept. 19, 1985 Injury pain in the neck for TV 'star' Bonk FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK Donald Chumley was once the toast of Newport Beach, Ca. The former Georgia Bulldog was honored recently by the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce for being the last player the 336th, to be exact selected in the 1985 NFL draft. Chumley, a defensive lineman, was the 12th-round pick of the Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers. He lasted several weeks before being released and signed by the Stamps.

The Newport celebration, renowned for its oddity, has been an annual affair. The last player picked by the NFL is given the same reception as the No.l choice. "They make a big thing about it down there," said Chumley, who was awarded an eight-day, all-expenses paid vacation in southern California. "It was a great way to start training camp." Some of Chumley's predecessors have included quarterback Randy Essington (L.A. Raiders), running back John Tuggle (New York Giants) and defensive back Tim Washington (49ers).

There's even been some success stories among the last-gasp selections. Receiver Dan Abramowicz starred in New Orleans, running back Don Nottingham started in Baltimore and offensive lineman Tyrone McGriff made it in Pittsburgh. Said Chumley: "If you're going to get picked late, you might as well be the last one." THE POINT AFTER: Montreal Concordes traded third-year cornerback Andre Francis to Saskatchewan yesterday for future considerations. Francis is currently in the option year of his contract and interested in trying out with a major-league baseball team Former Stamp offensive lineman Mike Palumbo has agreed to a 21-day trial with the Esks The CFL Stars-of-the-Week are Edmonton quarterback Matt Duni-gan, Hamilton Tiger-Cats' defensive lineman Grover Covington and Winnipeg linebacker Tyrone Jones Toronto Argonauts have signed defensive lineman James Curry to a new four-year contract. Bonk, who will play this Sunday against Saskatchewan, may get another audition later this season.

The majority of CBC commentators are contracted and subject to yearly review. Calgary Stampeders added some insurance at running back Wednesday with the addition of Dwight Beverly. A six-foot, 200-pound graduate of the University of Illinois, Beverly was a sixth-round draft choice of the National League's Indianapolis Colts in 1984. After his release, he signed and played with the USFL's Portland Breakers. In his senior year at Illinois, Beverly rushed for 685 yards and eight touchdowns and was an AP, UPI first-team Big 10 selection.

He is the only import runner the Stamps have behind starter Larry Mason, another former USFLer. Calgary, and its 2-7 record, has become the CFL's biggest box-office flop. The Stamps are down 44,304 fans compared to this time last year, accord- By Allan Maki (Herald staff writer) John Bonk missed more than the concluding minutes of last week's win over Montreal when he was carted from Winnipeg Stadium on a stretcher. The Blue Bombers' all-star centre, who suffered a pinched nerve in his neck last Friday, was forced to scratch his weekend audition as a color commentator with CBC television. Bonk and Chris Cuthbert, a CBC sportscaster from Edmonton, were scheduled to cover Sunday's Edmonton-Saskatchewan game at Taylor Field.

Their work which would not have aired was to have been taped and shown to network executives. Instead, the 35-year-old Bonk spent his weekend at home undergoing tests and watching the Eskimo-Roughrider game on TV. "I watched the game, anyways," said Bonk, who hosts a weekly fitness show in Winnipeg called Body Talk. "I was disappointed it (audition) didn't work out. It is something I really want." ing to figures released by the CFL office yesterday.

Calgary's declining attendance is by far the worst showing in the league. They are: Montreal (up Saskatchewan (up B.C. (up and Winnipeg (up Overall, the CFL's attendance after 44 regular-season games is 1,181,219, which is down 36,480 fans. Calgary's drop in 44,304 fans, at an average ticket price of $16, equates to a loss of $708,864 in projected revenue.

lONIQ EgEgfl ljls Si (CP-AP) New York Yankees get three more shots at Toronto Blue Jays before the baseball season comes to an end and Mary O'Dowd says she'd like to get another chance at the Canadian national anthem. But if she wants to do it for the Yanks or Jays, she'll have to wait for next season. O'Dowd, a professional singer for 12 years who performs nightly in a New York restaurant, had about as much luck with Canada last Saturday night Irish-American Night at Yankee Stadium as the Yanks did with the Blue Jays. She forgot the words and sang off-key. "I've sung at DAYS ONLY! i i i -sat 11 1 a this year, but you're going to see some difference next year." In his 12-year pitching career, however, Craig was known more for his losing.

He lost 24 games with the hapless New York Mets in 1962 and 22 games the following year. The lawyer for a Philadelphia caterer accused of dealing cocaine to major league players said Wednesday more players weren't called as defence witnesses because "their squirming and squeeching on the witness stand" wouldn't help his client. Adam 0. Renfroe the lawyer for Curtis Strong, 39, rested his case Wednesday after calling one baseball figure, Pittsburgh Pirates manager Chuck Tanner, as a defence witness in the U.S. district court trial.

"I am confident every base has been touched," Renfroe said. Judge Gustave Diamond said he will give the case to the jury this afternoon after Renfroe and U.S. Attorney J. Alan Johnson deliver their closing arguments. Renfroe promised a rough and tumble session.

"It's going to be a street fight," he said. "There's going to be a rumble in that courtroom." Johnson exhibited the chart he will display to the jurors that will summarize the 14 cocaine distribution counts against Strong and correlate thm with the players who were reported to lave bought the drugs and the teams they were playing for at the time. But I've never sung at a stadium. It was very overwhelming. I went blank. From the very bottom of my heart, I apologize. "Sometimes you get frightened but you pick it up and pull yourself together.

I did not." She said she left the field through the Yankees' dugout and told the players, "I hope you do better than I did." They didn't. The Blue Jays don't play at Yankee Stadium again this year and have booked their own singing talent. 3 CASINO PLACE 4040 Blackfoot Tr. S.E. Sept.

Rosen said he also will hire Bob Kennedy, his former assistant with Houston Astros. "1986 will be a year when the Giants will be competitive," Rosen said.
