When the plate was first passed he was given to understand why and what for, and thereafter for several weeks cheerfully chipped in without comment or complaint. But he finally wearied of the regularity with which he was being worked for a share of his small wage, and turning to a gentleman sitting next him iin the same pew after he had grudgingly met still another assessmenthe asked in a whisper heard all over the house "Say, bloy, who is this Glee Cli, who all time bloke The Kansas community who held an election the other day at which everybody voted for one church and every other denomination barred thereafter, would seem to have solved the problem. 1 1 was a question of one well supported or three poverty stricken pulpits, in the solution of which everybody had a voice and a vote. Outside the cities where concentrated population prevents, there is hardly a town in this entire country which is not church-ridden in which "Gee Cli" is "all time bloke" where a separate pulpit is maintained for every few hundred inhabitants. We are all agreed saint and sinner alike on the simple proposition that churches are good things.

by those favoring the idea, owners of property along the streets where the proposed improvement will be made, that the city will be money ahead in a few years, if it would construct the gutters and pay the entire cost out of the city treasury. Kvery few weeks a force of men and a team is needed to clean up the principal business streets of the city. Douglas avenue from Second street south two blocks, in particular, demands a great deal of attention by reason of the fact that most of the business of the town is done on the two blocks from Second street south to the Union Pacific tracks. It has been estimated that the cost of putting in a four foot gutter of cement along each side of the street will cost about one dollar a running foot, or about per lot of twenty-five feet. The majority of the property owners on both sides of Douglas avenue in the first block south of Second street have signified their willingness to stand half the expense of putting down this guttering by signing a petitton asking the council to order the gut tering put down on the condition that property owners pay half and the city the other half.
