CALGARY HERALD Oct. 9, 1984 C5 ronco boss Determined Turner team snaps Autumn Gold jinx elching fire 1 4 A i I --i X. i tled off the four straight wins to qualify from 'A'. In the championship round, Cheyne made a snappy, extra- end takeout, negotiating a narrow port to eliminate Judy Pen-dergast of Calgary 9-6, then scored a 7-4 triumph over Vancouver's Heather Kerr in the semis. But that six-game winning-streak was bettered by Turner.

After falling to the 'C, she beat Calgary rinks skipped by Terri Loshuk, Karen Lightfoot and Nelda Harker, then edged Cathy Borst of Edmonton 6-4 to qualify for the money round. In the quarter-final, she beat Crystal Brunas of Gray, 6-5, then shaded Marilyn Darte of St. Catharines by the same score in the semi-final. Kerr won a third-place cheque for $2,000, after defeating Darte 8-5. Calgary's Judy Lukowich and Sue Rutherford, Pender-gast, and Brunas each won $850 after reaching the quarter-finals.

Turner's victory was by far, the richest of her relatively brief skipping career. She had won the Karnloops Cash 'spiel a couple of years back, her only other major cash-bonspiel win. Her chief claim has been as provincial runner-up in both 1982 and '83 to Cathy Shaw in the provincial playdowns. Harper is the only newcomer to Turner's rink since those achievements. Turner recruited Harper this summer after Cordelia Schwengler joined the Lightfoot foursome.

By Murray Rauw (Herald staff writer) The first-place dollars of the Autumn Gold Classic will finally stay in Calgary. For six straight years, which is every year the Autumn Gold has been held, the $5,000 first-place purse from the annual women's bonspiel went out of town. The loot will be spent here this year.

Calgary's Sandy Turner prevented another huge chunk of cash from escaping the city's economy Monday, when she stole the extra end of the championship final, to defeat Marilyn Cheyne of Regina 5-4. The victory was the seventh straight for Turner's determined rink of third Peggy Harper, second Dar-lene Tucker and lead Debbie Mazuren. They'd been in a sudden-death situation at the Calgary Club since Saturday morning after losing their first two games of the three-life bonspiel. "It's just fantastic," said Turner, a Calgary school teacher. "The last two games see-sawed back and forth and I had to wait for a break.

I guess our break came when we got the steal in the eighth." Cheyne had built a 3-1 lead after six ends, but after that Turner took control. She took a single on the seventh, stole the eighth, made Cheyne take one in the ninth, and had the house set up for her deuce in the 10th. In the 11th, Cheyne's front end put the Regina rink in hot water right: away, and before long Turner had her shot stone biting the four-foot in front of the T-line, behind cover. With the hammer, Cheyne's only hope was to draw the full four-foot, although only half the ring was showing. She pinched the broom just a bit, and it scraped Turner's shot rock and veered off course.

Turner was shot by half a rock. "I look at it that I won $3,000, not that I lost $2,000," said Cheyne. The loss was Cheyne's fust of the bonspiel. She rat Broncos came back to tie the score 3-3 after 40 minutes. Bonora scored the winner at 5:02 of the third period anil Moffatt added the insurance goal into an empty net.

Matechuk added the spark in the first period, scoring his two goals and skating all over thrice. He is expected to provide some scoring punch this season and relieve some of the pressure from the big line. "I don't feel any pressure, but I know I have to score," said Matechuk, who tallied 29 times in 64 games last year. "They expect me to score." So does Matechuk himself. He has set his sights on at least 50 goals.

Maybe 60. Possibly 70. "I feel I can do it," said Matechuk. "I know I can put the puck in the net. I've always been a goal scorer." Matechuk's goal-scoring efforts couldn't have come at a better time for the Wranglers who opened their season with three straight losses.

The victory over Lethbridge was a big one psychologically. "This should give us a big lift," said Matechuk. "After losing three in a row, I was wondering what kind of club we had But the spirits are high now and we should be flying tomorrow (Tuesday)." The Wranglers play host to the Victoria Cougars tonight (7:30) at the Corral. NOTES: Houda and Mitch Cornett did not dress for the Wranglers. Houda will remain out of action for about a week suffering from a knee injury.

Cornett has yet to recover from an ankle injury Measures suffered a charley horse injury, but he is expected to play tonight Cougars suffered their first loss of the season Monday as the New Westminster Bruins won 4-1. Cougars are 1-1. In other league games, it was Brandon Wheat Kings 4 Moose Jaw Warriors 3, Medicine Hat Tigers 6 Prince Albert Raiders 4, and Karnloops Blazers 8 Portland Winter Hawks 5 Dave Thomlinson scored his second goal of the game at 4:24 of overtime for the Wheat Kings. Calgary 5 Lethbridge 3 By Mario Toneguzzi (Herald staff writer) Coach John Chapman emerged from the losing team's dressing room at the Corral with a scowl etched across his face. "We played (bleep).

We didn't play well the whole game in our own end of the rink," said Chapman after his Lethbridge Broncos lost a 5-3 Western Hockey League decision to the Calgary Wranglers Monday afternoon before 1,160 spectators. "We didn't put any pressure on them. "When you don't have everyone show up for the game, you don't win." Neither was Chapman impressed with 'new-look' Calgary Wranglers. "Calgary are in a lot more trouble than the Lethbridge Broncos," declared Chapman. "They need a little more depth up front.

I don't think he (Wrangler coach Sandy Hucul) has the quality to go with four lines. Once you get by (Doug) Moff'att, (Landis) Chaulk and (Ken) Quinney they don't have much. You can't go with lines in this league. "You get by (Doug) Houda, (Allan) Measures and (Dana) Murzyn and they're suspect on defence." An angry Chapman wasn't pulling any punches perhaps setting up the rivalry for the upcoming season. The teams meet again Friday night in Lethbridge.

"We didn't play physical today," said Chapman. "We will as we go along. We're big. Calgary will see more of the physical side when they come in Friday." Monday afternoon, the Wranglers relied on the scoring of their other lines to notch their first WIIL victory in four starts. Rod Matechuk led the way with two goals, while single goals went to Darryl Daignault, Ron Bonora and Moftatt.

Trent Kaese, Mark Tinordi and Jim Odland replied for the Broncos, now 1-2.
