N.W., Directors. many tourists were disappointed by cloudy weather Clouds spoil view of eclipse of sun MOSCOW (AP) Bad weather hampered observation by many of a major solar eclipse that swept across the Soviet Union and Japan today, but hundreds of foreign scientists at a Siberian station had clear skies. A total eclipse, with the sun completely covered by the moon, raced across an stretch of the Soviet Union from the Black Sea to the Kuril Islands in the Pacific Ocean, traversing the vast area in about two hours. Almost 30 Soviet observatories tracked the eclipse, an object of special scientific attention because it coincided with a period of high sunspot activity occurring every years. The skies were clear.

over the Siberian city of Bratsk, the viewing point for hundreds of foreign scientists. It was considered one of the best viewing points because the sun was high in the sky there, and a desk clerk at a local hotel said the weather was "marvellous." The Soviet Union's next total solar eclipse will not occur until the year 2126, although other areas around the world will have a dozen before this century ends. Newspapers gave heavy publicity to the event, and the Moscow Planetarium put on special educational programs. Several hundred Muscovites gathered in overcast weather on the Lenin Hills overlooking the capital for brief glimpses of a partial eclipse. Many shielded their eyes with exposed film or welders' goggles and a few watched through portable telescopes as the sun burned through heavy clouds several times during the 106 minutes.

But at the maximum phase, when 73 per cent of the sun's disc was shielded by the moon, the clouds were so dense that no one could see it. More than 1,000 Japanese journeyed to Wakkanai, Japan's northernmost city, where the eclipse was 87-per-cent total. But the heavy clouds parted only briefly, just before the peak, and they caught only a glimpse of the disappearing sun. "They've come a long way to be said a tourist official. People in other northern Japanese cities had better luck.

A search party is to be sent by the health and welfare ministry in August to look into the reports from the island, which has a population of 3,000. The Solomon Islands saw fierce fighting in the Pacific war.
